Wicked: For Good audiences got to see an intimate scene between Elphaba and Fiyero on screen, but there was an instance of passion between Fiyero and Glinda that was cut from the film. "There was a scene between Fiyero and Glinda that we cut in which they kissed; it was romantic and beautiful but a little too passionate," screenwriter Dana Fox told Deadline in an interview published on Friday, November 21. "Seeing that made it too hard to watch him make the choice he makes to be with Elphaba and made it too hard to make it OK that Elphaba ran off with him. It was too real that he and Glinda were actually feeling something together." Fox maintained that everything that was cut from the film was done so "for exactly the right reasons." Warning: Wicked: For Good spoilers ahead. Viewers were instead treated to a very awkward interaction between Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) and Glinda (Ariana Grande) following her surprise announcement of their engagement. On their wedding day, Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) frees all of the animals who have been caged and oppressed by the Wizard of Oz, ruining the ceremony. Breaking Down Wicked's Deleted Scenes: The Biggest Reveals and Teases Fiyero ultimately runs off with Elphaba to a cave, where they sing a fiery rendition of "As Long as You're Mine" and sleep together off screen. It's a scene that's been widely debated among fans, some of whom felt like the interaction went a little too far for the PG-rated film. Fox felt a makeout between Glinda and Fiyero would have tainted the love story between Fiyero and Elphaba that blossomed in the sequel. It's clear Glinda and Fiyero had a strong friendship, but was it ever really anything more given his yearning for Elphaba? "It was like a feeling that he really did love her, which he does care about Glinda a lot, don't get me wrong," Fox said of Fiyero and Glinda's fizzled connection. "But he likes her in a different way. But this scene was too romantic, so it was like, 'Oh, we can't know that because then our brains will explode when he doesn't choose her in the end. And then we'll hate Elphaba, Glinda and Fiyero.' So, I think it was a good cut because it was too adorable that you simply couldn't handle it." She conjures a spell to turn him into the Scarecrow in an attempt to protect him. After his transformation, he meets Dorothy, who is brought to Oz via a tornado conjured by Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh), along with the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion. Boq (Ethan Slater) is transformed into the Tin Man earlier in the film by Elphaba following a botched love spell done by her sister, Nessarose (Marissa Bode). Nessarose meets her fate when a house falls on her during the tornado, setting off a domino effect of heartbreaking events. In the attempt to make it back home, Dorothy "kills" Elphaba by dumping a bucket of water on her as Glinda watches from the shadows. It's revealed at the end of the film that Elphaba is still alive and was hiding underneath the floorboards in the tower. The Scarecrow comes to get her, and they set their sights on The Place Beyond Oz, a desert-like gray area outside of Emerald City. Director Jon M. Chu confirmed to Entertainment Weekly on Friday that there were "versions of that desert that were a lot darker and scarier - like walking into your fears," before they settled on a definitive ending for Elphaba and the Scarecrow. Chu, 46, wanted to make it clear that the desert "is not dead space, it's possibility. No one has explored that horizon because everyone's too scared."
