A high school football coach in Virginia has gone missing as his team vies for a state championship, prompting a massive search by authorities. Travis Turner, the head coach at Union High School in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, has not been seen since Thursday, November 20. The Virginia State Police explained that agents from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation were dispatched to Turner's home on Thursday, but while they were en route, they were informed he was not at the residence. Authorities were hoping to talk to Turner, 46, in the early stages of an investigation against an unnamed man in Wise County, where Turner lives. The police said agents were not heading to Turner's home in order to arrest him. Wise County Schools announced an unnamed staff member had been placed on administrative leave on Friday, November 21. "At this time, a staff member has been placed on administrative leave with pay while an external agency reviews an allegation that was reported to us," the statement read. "This is standard procedure and not a determination of wrongdoing. The division cannot comment further." The Virginia State Police confirmed an active search for Turner is currently underway, which began on Friday. "We had entered him in as an endangered missing person and started doing our searches," Virginia State Police 1st Sgt. Jason Day told News Channel 11 on Saturday, November 22. Day continued, "We have had the drones up in the air looking, searching" in addition to help from local K-9 units. After poor weather prevented state aviation from being used, a helicopter was utilized on Saturday to search a wooded area near Turner's home. "He had went into the woods right near the general location of his house, and that's basically where we've focused our search on," Day said. Turner was not in attendance when Union High School played its second round playoff game against Graham, a 12-0 victory. Union has a perfect 12-0 record. Wise County Public Schools Superintendent Mike Goforth told News Channel 11 that Jay Edwards will handle interim coaching duties amid Turner's absence. "Today is really about the students here and at Union High School," Goforth told the outlet. "You know, I can't discuss any personnel matters, and I really think that folks need to review the statement that we released yesterday. You can refer to the last statement if there's no further comment at this time." Union is set to face Ridgeview High School in the regional state semifinals on Saturday, November 29. According to ABC 33/40, Turner's wife, Leslie Caudill Turner, addressed her husband's disappearance in a since-deleted Facebook post. Leslie wrote that Travis was "missing and that's all we know." Travis spoke to a local reporter after Union's victory over Lee High School in the regional state quarterfinals on November 15, just days before he went missing. "I thought we did a good job adjusting to what they were trying to do offensively," Travis said. "I thought our kids adjusted. First time playing on a Saturday, it's a different feel."
