Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman lead an all-star cast in the 2025 comedy The Roses. In the director Jay Roach's movie, Theo (Cumberbatch) and Ivy Rose's (Colman) thin veneer of a happy marriage crumbles over control of their family home. Theo becomes envious of his wife's success as a budding restaurateur when he loses his job at a prestigious architectural firm and suddenly becomes a stay-at-home parent. Both of their lives are at a crossroads as Theo decides to file for divorce, leading to bth Roses resorting to the lowest of lows to take each other down. Their divorce boils down to who gets to keep their family home - and their friends and loved ones are all forced to choose sides. Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman star in The Roses as Theo and Ivy Rose, whose nasty divorce battle centers around who gets to keep their family home. "[They fight over the house] because they're both invested in it, you know, massively," Cumberbatch told NPR. Longtime friends Cumberbatch and Colman spend most of The Rose fighting relentlessly on screen, though they assured NPR that they are as close as ever in real life. "When you get to work with a friend as brilliant and fabulous as Olivia, but also the trust, the immediacy of how you can go further, faster, the shorthand," Cumberbatch said. "But also she's so, so, so good that you up your game." In a joint interview with ABC News, Cumberbatch described Colman as a "ridiculously charming human being" and a "loyal" friend. "He's the kindest, funniest, sweetest," Colman said of her costar. "Also, [he doesn't] know how lovely [he is]. There's a lovely humility to [him]." Ivy and Theo's messy breakup spirals completely out of control in The Roses, forcing their friends and family to pick sides. "[The Roses is] a tale about two people who really got a kick out of each other, and could still if they could just find their way back to each other, and ignore what their expectations were for their life. Some of which were gendered, some of which were not gendered," McKinnon told Refinery29. "I believe in this couple, even though things are not going well for them at present." Mr. Robot's Sunita Mani, Venom: The Last Dance actress Hala Finley and Nightbitch star Zoë Chao also appear in The Roses. What Is 'The Roses' Based On? The Roses is based on author Warren Adler's 1981 novel The War of the Roses. Danny DeVito previously directed a 1989 movie version of The War of the Roses, with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in the leading roles. Screenwriter Tony McNamara used the novel and previous film adaptation as a jumping off point but doesn't consider The Roses to be a direct remake. "Danny's movie is so great and I was like, 'Well, we can't do that again,'" McNamara told The Los Angeles Times. "That was about two people tearing each other apart as they get divorced, but this was more like: How do two people who desperately want to stay married stay married despite not having the skill set to do so?" Colman also differentiated between The Roses and its predecessor, describing her version as "its own beast." "It's not a remake or a reboot or any of those 're' phrases," she added to The L.A. Times.
