Marvel / (C) Columbia Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection Before Madame Web had even played in a single theater, it was already earning a bad rap for clunky trailer dialogue, such as the now-infamous, "He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders right before she died." Perhaps because of its internet meme status, or perhaps for legitimate editing purposes, the line is nowhere to be found in the actual film. 2. Madame Web is an old woman in the comic books. The superhero Madame Web, whose real name is Cassandra Webb, is much older in the comic books than she is in the movie. In the comics, Madame Web is an elderly clairvoyant who is hooked up to so many life support machines that it looks like a web. She's also blind. The film, however, creates an origin story for the superhero, in which she's a woman in her 30s just discovering her future-seeing powers. Interestingly enough, this is not the first Marvel character to be de-aged. Both Agatha Harkness in WandaVision and Aunt May in Spider-Man: Homecoming are much younger than their comic book characters as well. 3. We get to see a younger version of Peter Parker's Uncle Ben as well. Marvel / (C) Columbia Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection Ben Parker, the uncle of Peter Parker/Spider-Man is a pivotal character in the Spider-Man films, as his death is often intertwined with Spidey's origin story. In Madame Web, we see a much younger Uncle Ben (who isn't even an uncle yet), played by Adam Scott. Seeing him so young is bittersweet, given that we know where his narrative ends. 4. Madame Web's name has links to Greek mythology. Sony/Marvel Madame Web's real name is Cassandra, even though she goes by Cassie for much of Madame Web. Cassandra, in Greek mythology, is a Trojan princess cursed by the god Apollo with the power to see the future, although no one will believe her. In The Iliad, she prophecies that the Trojan horse is dangerous, but no one pays attention to her warning. In the film, Cassandra Web can also see the future, although sometimes people don't believe her. 5. No superhero names are used in the movie. Marvel / (C) Columbia Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection Despite being a superhero movie connected to the Spider-Man universe, focused on Madame Web and various Spider-Woman iterations, none of the superhero names are ever used in the film. In many ways, that feels like a choice to set up a sequel that will likely never be made. 6. The script was rewritten multiple times, including once just before filming. Marvel / (C) Columbia Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection Madame Web seemed plagued with issues from early on in the filmmaking process, and the script was reportedly shortened by 20 to 30 pages just before filming, which contributed to some of the movie's inconsistencies. 7. In fact, the entire timeline was even altered at one point to shift the setting from the 1990s to 2003. Jessica Kourkounis /(C) Marvel / (C) Columbia Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection When Madame Web was initially conceived, it was meant to be a tie-in to the Amazing Spider-Man films, and so it was set in the 1990s to line up with those dates. However, after the Sony/Marvel deal, the time period was moved to 2003 so that it could potentially tie into the MCU Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland instead. Ultimately, however, neither Spider-Man made an appearance in the film. 8. Madame Web filmed using the code name "Claire." Jessica Kourk
