The United States Department of Justice has indicted former Olympic snowboarder Ryan Wedding on murder and money laundering charges related to an alleged drug trafficking ring that funneled drugs from Mexico into the U.S. and Canada. Attorney General Pam Bondi accused Wedding, 44, in a press conference on Wednesday, November 19, of ordering a hit on a federal witness in a restaurant in Medellin, Columbia, before he could testify against Wedding. A $2 million reward is being offered to anyone with information leading to those involved in the alleged murder. Wedding competed for Team Canada at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, where he placed 24th in the men's parallel giant slalom. He gave up the sport shortly after his Olympics appearance. The ex-Olympian was charged with running a criminal enterprise, murder, conspiring to distribute cocaine and other crimes in October 2024. His alleged drug ring moved 60 tons of cocaine and netted a billion-dollar profit per year, according to Bondi, 60, who announced the indictment in a press conference on Wednesday, November 19. She also called him "one of the most prolific and violent drug trafficking organizers in the world." "You do not get to be a drug dealer and evade the law." The FBI is offering a $15 million reward for the capture of Wedding, a Canadian citizen who was living in Mexico and is now considered a fugitive. The Bureau previously offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest and extradition. "Drugs are killing our kids... our friends, our relatives - and this guy is responsible for a tremendous amount of that horror. We will not sit idly by," Bondi said. "The justice department will use every tool available to catch these monsters." As part of the investigation, law enforcement recovered nearly $3.2 million in cryptocurrency and more than $13 million in physical assets, Bondi claimed. She believes the Sinaloa cartel of Mexico is "closely protecting him." "Wedding went from shredding powder on the slopes at the Olympics to distributing powder cocaine on the streets of U.S. cities and in his native Canada," Akil Davis, the Assistant Director of the FBI's Los Angeles Field Office, said in March when Wedding was added to the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list. Members of Wedding's group are accused of murdering two members of a Canadian family in 2023 in retaliation for a stolen drug shipment. The murders, which Wedding and Andrew Clark, whom the FBI arrested in October 2024, later appeared to be a case of mistaken identity. "Treasury is joining with the FBI and the Department of Justice to cut Wedding and his criminal partners off from the U.S. financial system and help dismantle the network they rely on," said John K Hurley, Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, in a statement on Wednesday. "Our goal is simple: make it difficult for criminals like this to profit from poisoning our communities."
