In 2017, Prime Video was still in the earliest stages of its original programming when it picked up Absentia, a thriller series starring Stana Katic. Before appearing on this show, Katic had co-headlined eight seasons of Castle on ABC. Absentia gave Katic another showcase for her talents. Absentia is the latest Prime Video original to move to Netflix, where it's already cracked the top 10 shows. Now, Watch With Us is sharing three reasons why you should watch Absentia on Netflix this month. 5 Best Harlan Coben Netflix Shows, Ranked: From 'Safe' to 'The Innocent' 'Absentia' Has An Intriguing Mystery Katic portrays FBI special agent Emily Byrne, a woman who was missing and presumed dead for years. While she was gone, her husband, special agent Nick Durand (Patrick Heusinger), remarried to a woman named Alice (Cara Theobold) and raised his son, Flynn Durand (Patrick McAuley). Nick also saw Conrad Harlow (Richard Brake) convicted and imprisoned for murdering Emily. Six years later, Harlow contacts Nick with Emily's whereabouts, and she's discovered to be still alive. This revelation allows Harlow to walk free, and raises several questions. Why was Emily taken? How come she can't remember anything about that time? And who framed her for murder? All of those questions come to the forefront in the first season, which plays like an extended movie. Stana Katic Gives a Fantastic Performance Stana Katic, Kaja Chan in Absentia Elena Nenkova / (C)Amazon / Courtesy Everett Collection In Castle, Katic had to share the spotlight with Nathan Fillion. By contrast, Katic is clearly the lead performer in Absentia, and she isn't second to anyone on this show. She has to carry the emotional weight of Emily's ordeal, her estrangement from her family and utter despair while also building her character back from the ground up. This 2015 Mystery Series Is Popular on Netflix - Here's Why You Should Binge It Almost everything in this series revolves around Emily in some way, and Katic always tailors her performance as needed. She can be a badass action heroine, as seen in the clip above, or she can pull on the heartstrings as Emily tries to regain her connection with her husband and child. In short, Katic makes the audience care about Emily's emotional and physical well-being. We can't really call it a star-making performance because she was already a star. But it is some of the best work of her career. 'Absentia' Has a Satisfying Ending Absentia only had a three-season run, which is relatively short in TV terms. But because each season was largely built around one major story, there was a payoff with each season finale. All of the questions raised about Emily's past came to light, and then the show set the table for a new season of stories. Although Absentia could have continued if it had been renewed for a fourth season, season 3 largely wrapped up a lot of the lingering plots. Without spoiling too many details, it's not exactly a happy ending for Emily, and she doesn't get everything she wants. But since the show had to end at that point in time, it feels like a fitting conclusion for Emily and the rest of the surviving characters. That's more closure than most shows get, and it's worth binge-watching 30 episodes of Absentia when you know there's a real ending waiting for you. Absentia is streaming on Netflix.
