Now, R.J. Cutler and Laurent Bouzereau (Music by John Williams) are developing a documentary that will explore the theft and the search for the criminals, as well as the public obsession that followed. The project will focus on the jewel heist that took place on Oct. 19 and saw men disguised as construction workers break into the Louvre's Galerie d'Apollon through a second floor window and shatter display cases, grabbing pieces of the French Crown Jewels, including tiaras, necklaces and other jewelry valued at over $100 million. The men then fled on motorbikes. (While multiple suspects have now been charged in the case, the jewels have yet to be recovered.) It will also examine where the jewels could have ended up, from the black market to the Antwerp diamond trade. Bouzereau will direct the doc and produce via his Nedland Films, with Cutler producing via his This Machine banner. The doc, part true-crime and part thriller, promises access to investigators on the case, eyewitnesses, and museum officials, as well as citizens. Along with Cutler, Elise Pearlstein and Trevor Smith will produce for This Machine, with Mark Blatty and Sally Rosen Phillips executive producing. Bouzereau and Markus Keith are producing for Nedland. Recent This Machine films include the Emmy-nominated Martha Stewart doc Martha on Netflix and Disney+'s Elton John: Never Too Late.
