The Cambridge Dictionary announced their Word of the Year... and it's totally inspired by Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift! The official news release from the Cambridge University Press & Assessment (which is the publishing house for the dictionary) revealed the word choice was inspired by Taylor and Travis' engagement, as well as the lyrics in her songs! The word is... Parasocial. The official definition for the word, per the dictionary, is "involving or relating to a connection that someone feels between themselves and a famous person they do not know, a character in a book, film, TV series, etc. or an artificial intelligence." In the publishing house's explanation, they said: "Millions of fans related to Taylor Swift's confessional lyrics about dating, heartbreak and desire, leading to what psychologists describe as 'parasocial' bonds with stars. When Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announced their engagement, many fans felt a deep connection to the singer and American footballer, even though most had never met them." The statement continued, noting that Travis' podcast New Heights itself was also a bit of a catalyst: "The spontaneity, imperfection and confessional nature of podcast hosts have been said to replace real friends and to catalyse parasocial relationships." Interesting! Colin McIntosh, Editor in Chief of The Cambridge Dictionary, also had a lot to say on the word choice. He said in a press release: "Parasocial captures the 2025 zeitgeist. It's a great example of how language changes. What was once a specialist academic term has become mainstream. Millions of people are engaged in parasocial relationships; many more are simply intrigued by their rise. The data reflects that, with the Cambridge Dictionary website seeing spikes in lookups for 'parasocial'."
