"Shortly before noon today, the Oakland Police Department received ... some reports about shots being fired in and around the Laney College campus," Oakland PD acting police chief James Beere said at a Thursday press conference. "Officers arrived on scene, located a victim suffering from a gunshot wound. He was immediately transferred to a local hospital where he is currently being treated." Police are seeking a male suspect of unknown race who was wearing dark clothing and a black hoodie. Investigators and crime-scene technicians were quickly on the scene, and police interviews were underway, Beere said. Surveillance footage was also being reviewed. Beam was later identified by officials - including Oakland mayor Barbara Lee - as the victim. "The last two days have been incredibly heavy for our city," Oakland mayor Barbara Lee said in a statement. "My thoughts are with Coach John Beam and his loved ones. We are praying for him." Beam has been the athletic director at Laney since 2006 and became its head football coach in 2012. He stepped down from coaching football just last year. The local Bay Area ABC affiliate reported that Beam was shot in the head and is in critical condition. Oakland police and the Peralta Community College District did not immediately respond to The Hollywood Reporter's request for comment on the report. "Coach Beam is a giant in Oakland - a mentor, an educator, and a lifeline for thousands of young people. For over 40 years, he has shaped leaders on and off the field, and our community is shaken alongside his family," Lee's statement continued. "This is the second shooting on an Oakland campus in two days, and it is devastating. Schools should be the safest spaces in our city. We need guns off our streets now. We are standing together, praying for Coach Beam and his loved ones." On Wednesday, in an unrelated incident, a teenager was shot at an Oakland high school. Beam and the Laney Eagles football team were featured on Last Chance U, a documentary series from prolific sports-documentarian Greg Whiteley, in 2019.
