Period. Christy deserved better."by Stephanie SoteriouBuzzFeed StaffFacebookPinterestLink This article contains spoilers for the movie Christy and makes brief references to domestic violence and drug use. I am sure that you are pretty well-versed in the Sydney Sweeney "eugenics" scandal by now, but would you believe that there has been yet another development? Michael Kovac / Getty Images In case you missed it, Sydney courted controversy back in July when her American Eagle "great [genes]" campaign was accused of implicitly glorifying whiteness and promoting eugenics. Michael M. Santiago / Getty Images The whole thing was made significantly worse when the White House spoke out in defense of the ad, and when BuzzFeed confirmed that Sydney had registered as a Republican in the summer of 2024, President Donald Trump also heaped praise on her. Anna Moneymaker / Getty Images It eventually blew over without Sydney commenting on it, but last week, it erupted tenfold when she broke her silence in a controversial interview with GQ. Here, she played down the situation and refused to deny that the ad was about eugenics. GQ When she was explicitly asked if she'd like to address the specific criticism that "white people shouldn't joke about genetic superiority" in the current political climate, Sydney said: "I think that when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear." In addition to her comment, Sydney's nonchalant demeanor in the video interview also sparked backlash. GQ Needless to say, this quickly led to widespread scrutiny, with Aimee Lou Wood, Christina Ricci, and SZA among the stars to have expressed their disapproval of Sydney's recent behavior. Michael Buckner / Getty Images But not everybody has turned their back on the Euphoria actor, with her The Housemaid co-star Amanda Seyfried among the celebs to still be sharing their support, as well as Nicola Peltz Beckham, Maude Apatow, and Mario Lopez. Greg Doherty / Getty Images Amid all of this, Sydney has been trying to promote her new movie, Christy, which is a biopic about the boxing legend Christy Martin, who competed between 1989 and 2012. (C) Black Bear /Courtesy Everett Collection It's worth noting that Christy endured an incredibly difficult personal life, and despite knowing she was a lesbian from "5th or 6th grade," she married her manager, James V. Martin, when she was 22 years old and he was 47. Christy has alleged that her husband was emotionally and physically abusive, and accused him of enabling her cocaine addiction in order to control her. Al Bello / Getty Images Spoiler alert for the movie ahead: When Christy told her husband that she wanted a divorce in 2010, then-66-year-old James shot her, stabbed her, and left her for dead. James was arrested and found guilty of attempted second-degree murder in April 2012. Christy married her former ring rival Lisa Holewyne in 2017. So, when Christy seriously underperformed on its opening weekend - marking Sydney's third box office flop in four months - many were left disappointed that Sydney's personal controversies were seemingly affecting the legacy of a real survivor. Among them was Ruby Rose, who claimed that she was originally attached to play Christy, whom she called "Cherry," in the biopic as she slammed Sydney's PR spin for the movie not doing well. Stefanie Keenan / Getty Images For reference, defiant Sydney posted this to her Instagram page on Monday: "i am so deeply proud of this movie. proud of the film david made. proud of the story we told. proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin. this experience has been one of the greatest honors of my life.""this film stands for survival, courage, and hope. through our campaigns, we've helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence. we all signed on to this film with the belief that christy's story could save lives," she went on. "if christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded. so yes I'm proud. why? because we don't always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. and christy has been the most impactful project of my life. thank you christy. i love you." "The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry," Ruby, who is a lesbian, wrote earlier this week. "Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It's part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time."
