VALERIE MACON / AFP via Getty Images In a cover story for InStyle magazine, the 36-year-old actor explained that while she doesn't mind acting in an independent film without distribution that is later sold to a streamer, she's not signing on for major studio films without a guaranteed theatrical release. Jesse Grant / Getty Images for YES Scholars "If a movie is made independently and only sells to a streamer, then fine. But I don't want to make something where that's the end-all," Elizabeth said. JB Lacroix / FilmMagic "I think it's important for people to gather as a community, to see other humans, be together in a space. That's why I like sports. I think it's really powerful for people to come together for something that they're excited about. We don't even audition in person anymore," she continued. In 2024, she starred in The Assessment, another independent arthouse film that had a theatrical release through Magnolia Pictures the following year.
And, she's starring in the upcoming A24 project, Eternity, which is set for a November 2025 theatrical release. Outside of her independent filmmaking career, everybody knows her as Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since her surprise debut in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. And luckily, she's not over portraying Wanda Maximoff. "Making the films is joyful. And goofy. It's ridiculous. We're grown people behaving like children on a playground," she said. "We're flying. We're shooting things out of our hands. And it's a character that I've gotten to return to so many times over 10 years. It's good to put her down and then I miss her and I want her back. I'd jump at the opportunity to be in her shoes again." Chelsea Guglielmino / Getty Images The reality is, compared to her independent film work, there's a "consistency" for everyone involved in the major studio franchise. "It's the consistency of a community and a job, which is hard to find," she added. "The insane camera movement, stunt work and special effects, visual effects that are happening in real time." ARASH OSKOOIE / Middle East Images/AFP via Getty Images She continued, "It's a lot of coordination, it's hundreds and hundreds of people on set, and it's a powerful thing to be a part of all those people working towards one goal. The people doing the visual effects are artists." Angela Papuga / Getty Images Ultimately, it's the MCU movies that have allowed her the freedom to be involved in more independent films. "It's financial security, I can make choices. It's offered me value, and that's useful when making independent movies." Charley Gallay / Getty Images for Disney In the interview, Elizabeth also defends superhero movies, which have been criticized for their larger-than-life productions. "The soul, the spirit, the heart is fulfilled doing it. It does mean something. I care about the acting being great - everyone does," she said. "There are hundreds of people doing their job to the highest degree. That's why it's frustrating for them to not be acknowledged for the artistry that is involved. A lot happens in visual effects afterwards-'cause we can't actually fly, you know?" Chelsea Guglielmino / Getty Images The jury is still out on whether or not Elizabeth will return to the MCU, but I'm holding out hope because while I'm excited for her upcoming movies and TV shows, we're long overdue for more Scarlet Witch.
