But for a whole load of other famous faces, their names not being the one that they were given at birth is a little less obvious. In fact, some of the new monikers sound so natural or suit them so well that you might have never even stopped to think that they weren't always known by them. Here are 16 of the best examples: 1. Andy Samberg is most renowned for his lead role as Jake Peralta in the sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but before he was known as Jake, and before he was known as Andy, he was known as David Samberg. Dia Dipasupil / Getty Images During a 2016 appearance on the Howard Stern Show, Andy confirmed that his parents originally called him David, but went along with it when he told them that he wanted to change his name to Andy at age 5. Fox / Getty Images "For some reason, when I was 5, I got it in my head that it should be Andy. And then I told my mom and she was just like: 'OK!'" he explained, adding that David had actually been his grandfather's name, so "it was kind of shitty" that he changed it. 2. And Andy isn't the only star to have changed their name as a minor, with Portia de Rossi revealing that she changed her name from Amanda Rogers at 15 after struggling with her sense of self and identity. Steve Granitz / Getty Images In 2005, Portia explained that she had wanted to redefine herself, telling the Advocate: "When I was 15, I changed it legally. In retrospect, I think it was largely due to my struggle about being gay. Everything just didn't fit, and I was trying to find things I could identify myself with, and it started with my name." Jason Merritt / Getty Images She also shared that she chose "Portia" because of the strong female character in the William Shakespeare play The Merchant of Venice, who she admired. Of "de Rossi," Portia said: "I was Australian, and I thought that an exotic Italian name would somehow suit me more than Amanda Rogers. When you live in Australia, Europe is so far away and so fascinating, so stylish and cultured and sophisticated." 3. Jodie Foster is another star who changed their name pre-fame, but this time, it wasn't in an official capacity. The Oscar-winning actor was actually born Alicia Foster, but her older siblings gave her the nickname "Jodie" when she was a baby, and it just kind of stuck. Jamie Mccarthy / Getty Images While she never formally changed her name, when it came to the star being given a stage name when she first ventured into acting at three years old, "Jodie" was a no-brainer. 4. Childhood nicknames becoming stage names is somewhat of a common theme, with little Peter Hernandez becoming known as "Bruno" as a toddler purely because his dad thought he resembled the professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino. Robyn Beck / Getty Images And when Bruno started performing as a kid, he decided he needed a last name that reflected his out-of-this-world energy, and that's when "Mars" came into play. Speaking to GQ, Bruno explained: "I felt like Bruno Mars just sounded bigger than life." 5. And Destiny Hope Cyrus might sound like a pop star name, but it turns out, it wasn't quite as powerful as Miley Ray Cyrus. Aeon / Getty Images In case you missed it, Miley's parents actually named her "Destiny" at birth because they believed that she'd go on to do great things, but this moniker eventually turned into Miley thanks to her childhood nickname, "Smiley." By her mid-teens, Destiny was a distant memory, and Miley legally changed her name in 2008 - adding "Ray" in honor of her grandfather. 6. You'd be hard pushed to think up a cooler name than River Phoenix, so perhaps it should be unsurprising that this was not the name that the Hollywood actor was born with. In fact, his last name was way less endearing, with the star originally known as River Bottom. Nancy R. Schiff / Getty Images However, it wasn't River who opted for change, with his parents changing the family last name after they left their missionary work with the Children of God religious group in the late '70s. Dianna Whitley / Getty Images The family apparently wanted a clean break from their time with the group, and chose "Phoenix" after the mythical bird that rises from its own ashes to symbolize the family's renewal, transformation, and newfound freedom. 7. So, in a similar vein, River Phoenix's younger brother Joaquin Phoenix also used to be known as Joaquin Bottom. But some time in-between being Joaquin Bottom and Joaquin Phoenix, the actor was known as Leaf Phoenix. Aldara Zarraoa / Getty Images This moniker came about when Joaquin was very young an
