Oscar-nominated actor and singer Cynthia Erivo is set to lead the upcoming animated movie-musical Bad Fairies, a magical comedy featuring original songs by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, the Tony-winning duo behind Six: The Musical. The film is slated for release on May 21st, 2027. Directed by Megan Nicole Dong (Centaurworld) and co-directed by Olivier Staphylas (Puss in Boots, Wish Dragon), Bad Fairies will be produced under a new partnership between Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Locksmith Animation, with visual effects and animation by DNEG Animation. The screenplay comes from Deborah Frances-White, best known for The Guilty Feminist podcast. Erivo will voice Jayne Staplegun, a rebellious fairy whose defiance sets off chaos in a world governed by strict magical rules. The role marks Erivo's first leading performance in a major animated feature, following acclaimed turns in Harriet, Wicked, and Genius: Aretha. Adding even more musical star power, Isabella "Machine" Summers of Florence + The Machine will compose the score and contribute additional songs, blending her signature ethereal sound with Marlow and Moss's sharp, modern pop sensibilities. With an all-star creative team and a powerhouse performer at its centre, Bad Fairies promises to deliver a vibrant, rebellious twist on the classic fairy-tale formula - complete with show-stopping tunes and plenty of mischief.
