Paramount Pictures / Getty Images, Vera Anderson / WireImage As fans mourn the passing of the award-winning actor, director, producer, and photographer, some words from a friend about who Diane was might bring some much-needed solace. Amy Sussman / Getty Images The source close to Diane told People that the Annie Hall actor was "one in a million." Axelle/Bauer-Griffin / FilmMagic "She lived exactly how she wanted to, which was on her own terms, surrounded by the people and things she really loved," they continued. According to the source, "Being in the spotlight wasn't important" to Diane. It was her home, family, and beloved golden retriever, Reggie, that were most important. Bellocqimages/Bauer-Griffin / GC Images "Diane always had a very strong sense of who she was and how she wanted to live," the source told People. "In these last few years, she kept a close circle and she liked it that way. She was funny right up until the end and she had this way of making even ordinary moments feel special. That was just who she was." Rodin Eckenroth / WireImage Another source told People that, "In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private. Even longtime friends weren't fully aware of what was happening." In March, she even listed her "dream home," which surprised many who were unaware of her current health status. According to ABC News, Diane's death was confirmed by Dori Rath, a producer who worked with her. No other information about the cause of death was available. The LA Fire Department responded to a medical call to Diane's Brentwood home at 8:08 a.m. PST on Saturday and took a patient to the hospital. Diane was an Academy Award-winning actor, a friend to many celebrities, and a mother of two children. Axelle/Bauer-Griffin / FilmMagic To her many fans, she was an icon who shaped the framework for the standard of romantic comedies and timeless films that remain part of the zeitgeist well beyond their original debut.
