Netflix For reference, Ed gained widespread attention in 1957 when authorities discovered that he had exhumed corpses from local graveyards and made keepsakes like lampshades and ornaments out of their bones and skins. Bettmann / Getty Images He also confessed to killing two women, with it said that Ed was trying to create a "woman suit" after his beloved mom's death, and psychiatrists ruling that he only targeted women who resembled his mom. Ed ended up pleading not guilty by reason of insanity to one count of first-degree murder in November 1957, and he was later diagnosed with schizophrenia, which ruled him unfit for trial. A judge ordered Ed to be committed to Central State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, and he spent the rest of his life in similar facilities. And while viewers have been left horrified and disturbed by this season of Monster, it's undeniable that one of the most stand-out parts of Charlie's performance as Ed is his distinctive voice, which you can remind yourself of below: @netflix Ed Gein uttered one word and the vibes were instantly off #EdGein ♬ original sound - Netflix - Netflix Netflix / Via tiktok.com Charlie was born in Newcastle, which is in the north of England, so this accent is definitely a far cry from his usual speaking voice. In an interview with Variety, he revealed that he received rare audio recordings of the real Ed and quickly realized that "the voice needed to be really specific." Kristina Bumphrey / Getty Images Per Variety, Charlie asked Joshua Kunau, who produced the documentary Psycho: The Lost Tapes of Ed Gein, if he could share a 70-minute audio of an interview with Ed that was not legally admissible. The tape had been recorded on the night that Ed was arrested, and Charlie was able to use it to inform his performance. Netflix "I started to see him through a series of affectations to please his mother," he explained. "That's where the voice came from." Netflix Charlie's voice in Monster is considered so unnerving that a trend has emerged on TikTok of people trying to imitate it, and with that in mind, it's pretty wild that Charlie told Variety that he kept the voice throughout filming - even in his day-to-day life away from the set. Frederic J. Brown / Getty Images The star admitted that he didn't acknowledge how jarring this could be for his loved ones, and that he was simply embracing the process of becoming Ed. "I wasn't acutely aware of it being annoying to people," he admitted. "And I didn't stay in it in a way that was a labor. I was just having fun - I shouldn't say having fun. I was enjoying the process." Netflix You can watch the Monster trailer below, and be sure to let me know your thoughts on Charlie's process in the comments!"You're the one that can't look away."
