An untitled sequel to A Minecraft Movie will arrive in theaters on July 23, 2027, Warners announced Thursday. The video game adaptation was an outsized hit earlier this year, grossing $957.8 million globally - the second highest grossing movie of the year - and set off a hot streak for Warners, which followed it up with a series of hit movies such as Sinners, Final Destination: Bloodlines and Weapons. Jared Hess returns to direct and will write the script with Chris Galletta, one of the scribes of the original. Producers will include Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson and Jason Momoa, who was among the stars of the first movie. Jack Black, Sebastian Hansen, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks and Jennifer Coolidge also starred in the original movie. Minecraft's success took studio insiders by surprise, who knew they had something good, but never dreamed it would gross nearly $1 billion or become a viral phenomenon with teen viewers getting riotous in theaters for its "chicken jockey" moment. It opened in early April to $163 million domestically and $313 million globally, for the top start for a video game movie of all time, besting The Super Mario Bros. Movie two years earlier.
