Watch: Chris Appleton Breaks Silence on Divorce From Lukas GageLukas Gage is detailing how he overcame shame surrounding his mental illness. After The White Lotus alum shared his borderline personality disorder diagnosis in his forthcoming memoir I Wrote This For Attention, he expanded on why he wanted to come forward with such a vulnerable admission. "For so long, I didn't have the words for it, my whole teenage years of thinking it's depression, anxiety, bipolar, whatever," Lukas explained in an interview with Them published Oct. 9. "I want there to be a conversation that's not stigmatized and it doesn't feel like this dirty little secret that you have to have." Indeed, the 30-year-old-whose whirlwind marriage to celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton ended in 2024-felt inspired by others who had shared the same struggle, including Trisha Paytas, Madison Beer and Julia Fox, adding that it gave him a sense of "clarity." Of course, the Euphoria star also "didn't want to live in the shame of hiding it," despite being advised against sharing the omission by his team. "Some parts of my personality disorder are a pain in my ass," he continued, "but some parts I love and are really great, and I don't think that there's something inherently wrong with me."readLukas Gage Reveals If He Regrets Marrying Chris Appleton on The KardashiansLukas, whose memoir releases Oct. 14, also admitted that part of the shame he felt in not revealing his diagnosis felt too similar to the shame he'd felt surrounding his sexuality. "The two hardest things for me to talk about were the shame associated with my sexuality and the shame associated with my mental health stuff," the actor told Variety Oct. 6. "I hated how small I felt when I would talk about it and I guess I just had that moment where I was like I am not going to hold back anymore, I'm not going to be apologetic for who I am."AFF-USA/ShutterstockMeanwhile, Lukas' ex Chris also recently pushed back on shame surrounding the former couple's 2023 marriage and subsequent breakup later that year. "We shame people too much for leading with an open heart, especially when it doesn't work out," Chris explained during an Aug. 6 appearance on the On Purpose podcast. "And the sad part about that is you can learn to retract and protect yourself, but I would rather love and fall than to never feel anything at all." "I know that I hated my body," Penn told The Guardian in April 2025, "and simply wanted a different one." In response to the weight he gained following his parents' divorce, he added, "There was just a period where, coming out of depression and isolation, I was jumping wilfully into, but also being thrust into, this world where the more conventionally beautiful I seemed, the more successful I might be, the more value I might have." Despite the mental struggles, though, Penn credited his ability to persist to his spirituality. "That is what allowed me to persevere through the disillusionment, all the things I'd been grappling with," he explained, "and then come back to it all, but with hopefully some kind of inner transformation."
