Jalen Marlowe / (C) Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection Let's rewind to 2003, when we got the first film adaptation starring Eddie Murphy. While that one's always fun with the fam, it could never hold a candle to the 2023 version. I recently rewatched the remake from start to finish on Disney+, and here are all the thoughts I had besides the fact that it's perfect for Halloween season: Warning: Turn back now if you haven't seen the movie! There are spoilers ahead! 1. To start, it's in New Orleans! Not only is it one of my *favorite* places in the world, it's also one of the most haunted - fitting since this is a movie about ghosts and all things paranormal. (C) Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection The first sight of *the* mansion instantly brought me back to my youth, and riding the beloved attraction at Disneyland. Alyssa (Charity Jordan) introduces herself as a ghost tour guide. A ghost tour is one of the best things to do if you're a first-timer to NOLA. 2. And I instantly recognized the bar setting as Napoleon House in the French Quarter, famous for its muffuletta and Pimm's Cup. PSA: This is one of the best places to eat in the area. Starryvoyage / Getty Images The second-line parade with the brass band, umbrellas, and iconic music during a funeral is a VIBE. BuzzFeed TrendingHot TopicObsessed with all things Disney? Gabbie (Rosario Dawson) and her moving truck pulls up at the foggiest AND darkest time of day to really dial up the ~spooky~ vibes. Yep, I'm not joking. (C) Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection The house doors open by themselves, of course... Then, there's a blink-and-you-miss-it appearance of the Hatbox Ghost in the mirror and a creepy portrait of a bride with an even creepier laugh accompanying it. 4. Speaking of the Hatbox Ghost, can I mention the fact that Jared Leto plays this character? Absolutely iconic. (C) Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection I tried not to laugh too hard when Gabbie thought lighting a vanilla candle would be the game-changer to run off the ghouls and bumps in the night. At least she tried... 5. The Hatbox Ghost gives the menacing message -"You'll be back"- as the mother and son race off in the night. And that's just all in the beginning! (C) Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection Owen Wilson makes his appearance as Father Kent and starts asking about spectral photography, aka a camera that can capture actual images of ghosts. Why doesn't EVERY ghost tour have this gadget? Plus, he really tempts Ben (LaKeith Stanfield) with a good time when he asks him if he wants to be a hero. Who could turn that down? 6. Every piece of the decor is an ode to the original Disneyland ride, from the iconic stretching portraits, moving knights, floating candelabras, and classic wallpaper. Jalen Marlowe / (C) Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection Enter Danny DeVito and Tiffany Haddish as Harriet and Bruce. They're recruited for their psychic and historical skills - things you don't see every day on someone's LinkedIn. Gabbie's French vanilla Yankee Candle finally makes its grand entrance as Harriett conducts a seance. At this point, Gabbie might as well be an influencer for them, since she's a walking billboard! 7. Mr. Gracey gets contacted during the seance and tells the group to "talk to Leota." He could have been a tad bit more specific... (C) Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection As a pinnacle to the Haunted Mansion lore, Madame Leota (Jamie Lee Curtis) is quickly summoned. Leota explains how our world and the region beyond can cross paths with hauntings. She then dives deeper into ghost winks, which are signs from loved ones in the region beyond. More on that later! 8. You finally meet the three hitchhiking ghosts as Ben follows an apparition of what he believes to be Alyssa (his wife who tragically died in a car accident). The whole scene is a nod to the graveyard vignette at the Disneyland attraction. Disney You also meet the killer bride, yet another nod to the Disney ride, as Ben searches the cobweb-covered attic for Leota. They later conduct a ghost seance, and Ben finds himself in the ghost realm where he encounters the duelists, the dining room scene, the grandfather clock, and William Gracey roaming the halls with a lantern. 9.
