Charli XCX is back in the studio amid her rumored feud with Taylor Swift. The "Apple" singer, 33, took to X on Sunday, October 5, to share a short video taken inside a recording studio. An audio engineer could be seen sitting at a mixing board as several stringed instruments created a swelling sound, followed by two quick notes. Charli (real name Charlotte Emma Aitchison) simply captioned the cryptic post with a text heart. The pop star's clip comes after the release of Swift's 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, on October 3, featuring the song "Actually Romantic," which many fans believe to be a diss track about Charli. The title alone may be a nod to Charli's song "Everything Is Romantic" from her 2024 album Brat. "Wrote me a song saying it makes you sick to see my face / Some people might be offended." In the chorus, Swift continues, "But it's actually sweet / All the time you've spent on me / It's honestly wild / All the effort you've put in / It's actually romantic / I really got to hand it to you / No man has ever loved me like you do." Though both singers have denied the feud rumors, fans have long believed that Charli's 2024 song "Sympathy Is a Knife" is about Swift. Charli sings, "This one girl taps my insecurities / Don't know if it's real or if I'm spiraling. ... Don't wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend's show / Fingers crossed behind my back, I hope they break up quick." The "boyfriend" referenced in the lyric is Charli's now-husband, George Daniel, the drummer for The 1975. Swift dated The 1975 frontman Matty Healy in 2023, leading fans to believe that she was the "girl" Charli sang about in "Sympathy Is a Knife." "That song is about me and my feelings and my anxiety and the way my brain creates narratives and stories in my head when I feel insecure and how I don't want to be in those situations physically when I feel self-doubt," she explained. "Sometimes I'd look onstage [during a 1975 show] and be like, 'Oh, my God ... I'm never going to play these rooms, ever.' That made me feel jealous. I told Matty that. And George. They were both like, 'Shut up. What are you talking about?'" Swift praised Charli's talents in the same article. "I've been blown away by Charli's melodic sensibilities since I first heard 'Stay Away' in 2011," she said. "Her writing is surreal and inventive, always. She just takes a song to places you wouldn't expect it to go, and she's been doing it consistently for over a decade. I love to see hard work like that pay off." "'Actually Romantic' is a song about realizing that someone else has kind of had a one-sided adversarial relationship with you that you didn't know about," she said without naming a specific person. "And all of a sudden they start doing too much, and they start letting you know that, actually, you've been living in their head rent-free and you had no idea." Swift continued, "And it's presenting itself as them sort of resenting you or having a problem with you, but taking that and you just accepting it as love. And you accepting it as attention, affection, and how flattering it is that someone has made you part of their reality when you didn't even think about this. It's actually romantic if you really think about it."
