Eric Dane revealed he's not going down without a fight as he uses his own ALS diagnosis to bring about changes in fighting the disease. "ALS is the last thing they want to diagnose anybody with," Dane, 52, told California congressman Eric Swalwell during their recent meeting in Washington D.C., a clip of which was shared via the politician's TikTok on Monday, September 29. The Grey's Anatomy alum explained, "It so often takes all this time for these people to be diagnosed. Well, then it precludes them from being part of these clinical trials. That's why Act for ALS is so great because it broadens the access for everybody." As Dane - who publicly revealed his ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) diagnosis in April - spoke with Swalwell, 44, alongside doctors and representatives from the I AM ALS organization, he vowed to keep fighting for a cure to the currently incurable neurological disease. Eric Dane Speaks in 1st Video About ALS, Shows Progression of His Disease "I wanna ring every bell," Dane said. "I have two daughters at home. I wanna see them graduate college, get married, maybe have grandkids. I wanna be there for all that. So, I'm gonna fight until the last breath on this one." Swalwell, who met with Dane in support of getting federal funding for research for ALS, noted, "We're all in it with you," and said he will "do everything" he can to help get the authorizing bill to congress. "Let's do it man," Dane replied with a big smile on his face. He then made a joke about the only other thing Swalwell could help him with in that moment, quipping, "Refill that espresso, maybe, I'm a little tired, man." Eric Dane Tears Up Over Rebecca Gayheart's Support After ALS Diagnosis Dane released a statement in April, announcing that he has been diagnosed with ALS. The condition, which is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, according to Mayo Clinic. As of now, there is no cure and as the illness progresses, muscle control gets weaker and patients' speech slurs. After sharing his diagnosis, Dane said he is leaning on his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13. Every Time Eric Dane Has Been Candid About His Health Struggles Gayheart, who called off her and Dane's divorce in March after seven years of separation, told People earlier this month that their two girls are "taking it day by day" when it comes to their father's health battle. "We have some professional therapists who are helping us, and we're just trying to have some hope and do it with dignity, grace and love," Gayheart, 54, told the outlet on Saturday, September 27. "I mean, it's heartbreaking. My girls are really suffering, and we're just trying to get through it. It's a tough time." That same month, Dane shared his first video with fans since his diagnosis and showed the quick progression of the disease. Eric Dane Gets Emotional While Giving Update About ALS Diagnosis, Battle "I'm Eric. An actor, a father and now a person living with ALS," he said via the Instagram video shared on September 15. "For over a century, ALS has been incurable, and we're done accepting the status quo. We need the fastest path to a cure and that's why I partnered with I AM ALS on the Push for Progress. Our goal? A billion dollars over the next three years." In the video, Dane spoke slowly with a bit of a slur on some of his words. His arm was also twitching throughout the clip, which is a symptom of ALS. "Together, we'll renew the landmark law ACT for ALS, get promising treatments to thousands of patients like me. And finally, finally push towards ending this disease," he vowed.
