Sometimes, however, celebrities' long-held secrets are revealed to the public - and it's not always their decision. CBS / Via youtube.com Here are 18 times celebs hid a secret for years before it finally came out: 1. For most of her son Sean Astin's childhood, Patty Duke told him that he was born from an affair she had with Addams Family star John Astin, who kept their relationship a secret until his divorce, then married her. However, when Sean was 14, Patty confessed that his biological father was actually Desi Arnaz Jr., who was only 17 during their relationship (she was 23). The relative suggested a DNA test, so, living his own version of Mamma Mia!, Sean took a paternity test with John, Desi, and Michael. The results indicated that Michael Tell was his true biological father. He told People, "If you want to know who I am, John Astin is my father, Michael Tell is my biological father. ... I have a good relationship with Mike. That's who I am. I don't fault anybody, I don't fault myself or Desi, who is like my godfather, I have such a powerful love bond with this man, he's a gorgeous human being." I can support his truth as long as my truth, if not supported, is respected. I have told him I know what I know to be true. When God looks me in the eye and says, 'Anna Marie, you have been mistaken all these years,' then I will consider [Tell's paternity]." David S. Holloway / Getty Images 2. Jack and Meg White of The White Stripes, which formed in 1997, initially presented themselves as siblings, but in actuality, they were married (and not biologically related). In 2001, reports came out that they'd been married but divorced a year prior. Jack denied this, telling NME, "We're brother and sister. Someone started a rumor about how we used to be married, and we played along with it. That was a bad idea, we get asked this all the time now." Five years later, Jack told Rolling Stone, "I want you to imagine if we had presented ourselves in another fashion, that people might have thought was the truth. How would we have been perceived, right off the bat? When you see a band that is two pieces, husband and wife, boyfriend and girlfriend, you think. 'Oh, I see...' When they're brother and sister, you go, 'Oh, that's interesting.' You care more about the music, not the relationship - whether they're trying to save their relationship by being in a band." She said, "At that time, being pregnant out of wedlock was not a trend. It was not something that people praised. ... It was a 'sin,' and I felt like I could not be honest about that. I felt the pressure of...having to be perfect. I thought that everything that I had worked hard for...was threatened." OWN / Via youtube.com 4. Old Hollywood star Loretta Young, reportedly hid her daughter, fellow actor Judy Lewis, in orphanages and with other caretakers for the first 19 months of her life, lied about adopting her, and surgically altered her ears when she was 7 all to protect her secret - Judy was born from her affair with Clark Gable, her married Call of the Wild costar.
