Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Chipper Jones sparked debate after criticizing Rory McIlroy's decision to bring his wife, Erica Stoll, into the tense atmosphere of the Ryder Cup this past weekend. Jones, 52, took to social media on Sunday, September 28, suggesting that McIlroy, 36, should not have exposed his family to the hostile New York crowds. "I played in NY 12-15 times every yr for 20 yrs and multiple times in the postseason," Jones wrote via X. "AT NO TIME in 2 decades was my family EVER allowed to go to a game in NY. What do u expect to happen? Is it right? No! But when u are public enemy #1....expect to be treated harshly. No way that I expose my wife or kids to that. It's unfair, but it's reality in NY!" He added, "PS.....in response to the NY crowd.....epic performance by Euro team!" He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018, his first year of eligibility. The baseball star's post came after McIlroy revealed that Stoll had been struck by a drink thrown from the gallery during Team Europe's victory. "Erica's fine, she's a very strong woman," McIlroy told reporters on Sunday, September 28. "She handled everything with class and dignity like she always has and I love her. We're going to have a good time celebrating tonight." He added that some American golf fans crossed the line with their heckling. "I don't think we should ever accept that in golf," McIlroy said. "I think golf should be held to a higher standard than what was seen out there this week. Golf teaches you how to respect people. Sometimes this week, we didn't see that. This should not be what is acceptable at the Ryder Cup." Rory McIlroy kisses his wife Erica Stoll on day three of the 2025 Ryder Cup at the Bethpage Black Course, Farmingdale, New York. "I actually had no idea Erica had a beer thrown at her yesterday," Rose, 45, said on Sunday. "So fair play to Erica, she didn't bring that to the team room. We didn't make that a big deal. Rose added, "That says a lot about the strength of Erica and everybody in this team today." Team Europe's Shane Lowry also praised Stoll for her composure despite heavy abuse from the gallery. "I was out there for two days with Erica and the amount of abuse she received was astonishing," Lowry, 37, said on Sunday. "The way she was out there supporting her husband and supporting her team was unbelievable and kudos to her for that. Go on Erica." Rory McIlroy Curses at Fans During Ryder Cup Tee While Jones framed her presence as a mistake, fans online pushed back at his stance. One user wrote via X, "It's golf man. You were one of my favorites growing up. This is an absolute bum take." Another added, "This is an outrageous take lmao. I've gone to countless Cowboys games in the Meadowlands over the years and never once have I had a drink thrown on me. This is not a common occurrence in NY." Europe went on to win the Ryder Cup 15-13 on Sunday, with McIlroy securing his seventh title in the competition. "It was a rough week for all of us, but we shut them up by our performance and how we played," McIlroy said. "We tried to handle everything that came our way with class and poise and, for the most part, I felt like we did that."
