The cast has always been primarily white, and continues to be. Since the show started in 1975, there have only been four Latine cast members - Horatio Sanz, Fred Armisen, Melissa Villaseñor, and Marcello Hernández. Nbc / Getty Images I've found myself standing up, clapping, and wiping away tears in my Latina eyes (iykyk) on many a Saturday night, thanks to his consistently hilarious work and commitment to creating comedy that unabashedly references the cultural touchstones that we all grew up with. Nbc / Getty Images So, in honor of Latine Heritage Month, here are 19 Marcello Hernandez moments that have done us, the Latine community, proud. Christopher Polk / Getty Images ¡Bien hecho, Marcello! 1. In "Sábado Gigante" when El Chacal came in, scared the ever-loving [redacted] out of host Nate Bargatze, and dipped. NBC Universal / Via youtube.com Starting off strong with one of the best Latine moments in SNL history - the "Sábado Gigante" sketch. This was a real IYKYK moment for those of us who became extremely well acquainted with Chacal, nonsensical random singing games, and (most importantly) Don Francisco's eyebrows. Sábado Gigante is no stranger to Saturdays, and now the iconic show's spoof has made it to Saturday Night Live twice - first with Nate Bargatze, then with Paul Rudd. NBC Universal / Via youtube.com Every time life is hard or you wish you were born in a different era, just remind yourself that footage of Bad Bunny and Pedro Pascal with Abuelita wigs and light cardigans is readily available on the internet. It helps, I promise. 3. This moment in the same sketch when Pedro Pascal empties the tin of cookies and keeps the tin for sewing supplies also made me die. Every Abuela in the world has done this. In "Immigrant Dad Talk Show" when the immigrant dads (who spend 90% of their "show" talking about how their sons are disappointments) watch in abject horror as the White dad kisses his adult son on the mouth. NBC Universal / Via youtube.com Biblically accurate immigrant dad representation - pants hiked up too high, loafers without socks, and an undying sense of disappointment in your son. Representation in media MATTERS, people. You can watch the original "Immigrant Dad Talk Show" sketch below, or the second part, featuring guest host Dave Chapelle here. NBC Universal / Via youtube.com 6. In that same sketch, when they inform their White Spanish teacher (Mikey Day) that "asi asi" is not a real Spanish phrase. NBC Universal / Via youtube.com If you, too, are a Latine person who was forced to hear your non-Latine Spanish teacher use the term "asi asi" to death, you may be entitled to financial compensation. Laughed through all five minutes of this sketch, TBH. View this video on YouTube NBC Universal / Via youtube.com 7. Every time Hernández graces "Weekend Update," viewers are in for a treat, and this bit about Latinos and baseball is no exception. In "Can't Tonight" when they mention "the original dog from Beethoven" nine times, and then he appears. NBC Universal / Via youtube.com Ryan Gosling in a wig? Marcello and Keenan doing a Miami-off? An Eva Mendes shout-out? All the makings of a great sketch. The original dog from Beethoven, you will always be famous to me. View this video on YouTube NBC Universal / Via youtube.com 9. I will never move on from the way he throws his body around to do TikTok moves in "Cuban Mom," a bit from his stand-up set for the Just for Laughs festival in 2022. Just For Laughs Festival / Via youtube.com I just know Lorne saw this and kicked his little feet while calling Marcello's agent. Watch it here.
