And, boy, it's a lot to take in. Evan Bernstein / Getty Images For context, Michael, known to some as MPJ, is currently a player for the Brooklyn Nets. But before this, he'd spent his NBA career playing for the Denver Nuggets. After joining the team in 2018, MPJ signed a five-year, $179.3 million extension deal in 2021, which, according to his agent, had performance-based incentives that increased the worth to upwards of $200 million. Bart Young / Getty Images That's a whole lot of money, but it didn't mean Michael was willing to spend it too freely. Speaking with Justin Laboy on his podcast this week, the NBA player talked about the risk of ruining "everything you've built for your whole life" if you're not careful about the people you choose to date. This prompted a conversation about splitting rent with his ex-girlfriend, whom he dated for a year and a half during his time with the Nuggets. Garrett Ellwood / Getty Images "Hold on. I know you're not worth $200 million and was splitting rent with your ex-girlfriend," Justin said, halting the conversation in complete disbelief. "You're worth $200 million, her rent was probably $3,000, bro! She's killing herself to make half, and then she's always with you?! You cheap, brother." Laughing it off, Michael attempted to defend the decision by circling back to his fears of losing "everything you've built" as a successful person, saying: "It's very hard when you have money to tell a woman's intentions." Justin Laboy / Via youtu.be "I had never bought a girl expensive gifts before this last girl - and it was cool to do," he said, emphasizing that he "liked making sure she had nice things." "But I still wanted to know that she was with me for the right reasons. 'Cause every dude in this particular person's past had money. So I never wanted to feel like a girl was just with me because of what I have and what I could give her."He said he doesn't believe it's "a bad thing" if a "woman says that her type needs to have money." "I'm not saying that's wrong, because at the end of the day, a man is supposed to provide for a woman," he said. Michael and his ex never officially lived together, as he doesn't want to move in with a partner until they're married. So, as for how the rent-splitting situation came about, the 27-year-old explained that his girlfriend, who was from Los Angeles, was looking for an apartment, found a place both of them liked a lot, but it was out of her price range. Justin Laboy / Via youtu.be "It was double what she could afford," he explained. "So, I was like, 'This is really nice. I want you to be able to stay here, I wanna be able to pull up and stay here.'" They wound up splitting the rent 50/50, with MPJ promising that he would cover half of the rent for a year - even if they broke up before then. As it turned out, they wound up calling it quits "five or six months" into the apartment lease, and when Justin asked Michael if he'd sent her his remaining half of the rent now that they're not together, his answer was pretty complicated. Justin Laboy / Via youtu.be "She ended up hitting my phone asking for the bread, which I don't blame her because she went into that apartment not being able to afford it, and I gave her my word," he said, before explaining that he won't just send her a lump sum to cover the rest of the year because "she needs to act right month to month.""If I'm paying the remaining months, month to month, but then I see she's wildin', it's gonna be hard to continue that agreement," he said. "If you're out here wildin', get that next dude to pay that rent." In response, Justin suggested Michael was trying to "control" his ex's behavior. Well, that certainly gives us a lot to think about. A clip of the interview has racked up over 2.3 million views on X in the last day alone, and Michael's comments have sparked a serious divide, with some thinking it's fair, while others feel it's "egregious" given his wealth. @amyknowsball / Via x.com @theivyiriss / Via x.com @zoeycyberkitty / Via x.com @gelsonluz / Via x.com @Lizmej12 / Via x.com @iamlighte / Via x.com @livlife_ / Via x.com @esseverytime / Via x.com So, what do you think of all this?
