Michael Reaves / Getty Images In response, Tom said on the Fox Sports broadcast, "Those helmets can be... It's like the dog at home. Kick the dog, throw the helmet, whatever it takes." Mitchell Leff / Getty Images Now, it's worth pointing out that "kick the dog" is a metaphor for displaced anger, or taking out aggression on a defenseless target. Some people argued that Tom was using this metaphor in a harmless manner, with one tweet reading, "I think he meant the term 'kick the dog' to express anger towards something that can't express their feelings." "Its a figure of [speech]. When someone says 'Look for a dog to kick', they're not actually talking about dogs or kicking. Instead, it's an expression used to describe someone who is actively seeking a target or an outlet for their frustration or anger," someone else wrote. However, Tom's comment - and perhaps his specific reference to "the dog at home" - rubbed numerous internet users the wrong way.
