Conan O'Brien threw his support behind Jimmy Kimmel as drama surrounding the latter's late night show continues to unfold. "The suspension of @jimmykimmel and the promise to silence other Late Night hosts for criticizing the administration should disturb everyone on the Right, Left, and Center," O'Brien, who's hosted multiple late night shows throughout his career, shared via X on Friday, September 19. "It's wrong and anyone with a conscience knows it's wrong." Two days prior, a spokesperson for ABC confirmed to Us Weekly that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would be "pre-empted indefinitely" following the host's controversial comments about the death of Charlie Kirk. During the Monday, September 15, episode of his late night show, Kimmel, 57, referenced Kirk's accused killer, Tyler Robinson, in his opening monologue. Kirk, 31, was fatally shot earlier this month while speaking at Utah Valley University. Robinson, 22, later turned himself in and was charged with aggravated murder, among other offenses. How Late Night Reacted to Jimmy Kimmel Being Pulled From ABC "The MAGA Gang [is] desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it," Kimmel said on his talk show. "In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving." Kimmel faced pushback from Brendan Carr, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), who argued on Wednesday, September 17, that the comedian should apologize. Nexstar Media, one of the largest station owners in the country, also threatened to remove Kimmel from its programming lineup. A formal decision about the future of Jimmy Kimmel Live! has yet to be made, and according to a source close to the show, employees have been left in the dark. The insider exclusively revealed to Us that staffers were "initially told that the suspension was just going to be for the rest of this week," but due to conflicting messages, "no one knows what's really going on." Revisiting How Jimmy Kimmel Initially Reacted to Charlie Kirk's Death While Kimmel hasn't broken his silence on the scandal, the late night TV world quickly rallied around him. Two months after CBS announced plans to cancel The Late Show, host Stephen Colbert addressed ABC's decision to pull Kimmel from the air. "Tonight, we are all Jimmy Kimmel," he began during his Thursday, September 18, broadcast before taking aim at the network. "If ABC thinks that this is gonna satisfy the regime, they're woefully naive. This is blatant censorship. ... With an autocrat, you cannot give an inch. Jimmy, I stand with you and your staff 100 percent." Over on NBC's Late Night, host Seth Meyers called Kimmel's suspension "a pivotal moment in our democracy." "It is a privilege and an honor to call Jimmy Kimmel my friend, in the same way that it's a privilege and honor to do this show every night," Meyers, 51, added. "I wake up every day and I count my blessings that I live in a country that at least purports to value freedom of speech. ... There is a reason free speech is in the very first amendment. It stands above all others."
