BuzzFeed TrendingHot TopicLet's chat about all things PoliticsSee our Politics Discussions For context, back in July, news broke that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is being canceled after a decade-long run. Colbert announced the news during a segment on the show, saying, "Next year will be our last season. The network will be ending The Late Show in May." When the audience began to boo, Colbert added, "Yeah, I share your feelings. It's not just the end of our show, but it's the end of The Late Show on CBS. I'm not being replaced. This is all just going away." CBS / Via youtube.com CBS confirmed the news in a statement, noting that the cancellation was "purely a financial decision." After news broke, other late-night hosts shared their heartbreak, with Jimmy Kimmel notably sharing on his Instagram Story, "Love you Stephen. Fuck you and all your Sheldons CBS." Several people have speculated that CBS's decision to cancel the show was influenced by politics, given that it came almost two weeks after the network's parent company, Paramount, agreed to pay President Donald Trump $16 million to settle a lawsuit. The suit saw Trump accuse the show 60 Minutes of editing an interview with Kamala Harris in the run-up to the US presidential election, and misleading voters. Taking the stage, Colbert said, "Thank you for this honor. I want to thank CBS for giving us the privilege of being part of the late-night tradition, which I hope lasts long after this show." VALERIE MACON / AFP / Getty Images He then went on to thank his children and wife before saying, "Ten years ago, in September of 2015, Spike Jonze stopped by my office and said, 'Hey, what do you want this show to be about?' I said, 'Spike, I don't know how you could do it, but I would like to do a late-night comedy show that was about love. I don't know if I ever figured that out, but at a certain point - and you can guess what that point was - I realized that in some ways, we were doing a late-night comedy show about loss." CBS Colbert continued, "That's related to love, because sometimes you only truly know how much you love something when you get a sense that you might be losing it." CBS He concluded his speech, saying, "Ten years later, in September of 2025, my friends, I have never loved my country more desperately. God bless America. Stay strong, be brave, and if the elevator tries to bring you down, go crazy and punch a higher floor." CBS The Late Show team then stayed on stage for a little longer and embraced in an emotional group hug. CBS Let's go, Colbert. We'll follow you anywhere. And check out all of our Emmys coverage here.
