In honor of television's biggest night, here are some of the more controversial wins and snubs to have taken place this century: 1. In 2024, Jeremy Allen White won Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series for The Bear over Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Matt Berry. Monica Schipper / WireImage, Gilbert Flores / Variety via Getty Images The main criticism here is that the show is less of a comedy than it is a drama with comedic elements, meaning that some comedy legends have gone without being recognized for their performances. Given that The Bear is up for many comedy awards this year, the discourse is likely to return. 2. The same year, Liza Colón-Zayas won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy over Hannah Einbinder for Hacks. Kevin Winter / Getty Images, Amy Sussman / Getty Images This one was partially the whole "categorization of The Bear as a comedy" thing (see above), and less about Liza's historic win - she is the first Latina to have won the award, saying in her speech, "I didn't think it would be possible." But some also argued that Hannah was specifically deserving of accolades for her role in Season 3 of the show. When Liza won, Hannah's mom took to X and wrote, "FUCK. THE. BEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" 3. Throughout the years, Bob Odenkirk won zero Emmys for his portrayal of Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman on Better Call Saul, losing to actors like Josh O'Connor, Lee Jung-jae, and Matthew Rhys. Kevin Winter / Getty Images, Kevork Djansezian/NBC / via Getty Images Bob has the same number of acting Emmys as Better Call Saul has overall: None. This is despite the show recieving 53 nominations. 4. The Wire might be considered one of the greatest shows of the century, but it lost its 2005 nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series to House. Kevin Winter / Getty Images, Patrick McMullan / Patrick McMullan via Getty Images Its second nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series wound up going to Mad Men. It was never nominated in any of the other major categories. 5. In 2021, some were surprised to see Olivia Colman's depiction of Queen Elizabeth in The Crown take the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series win over Emma Corrin's Princess Diana. Gareth Cattermole / Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images, Dave Benett / Dave Benett/Getty Images for Netflix Emma did take the Golden Globe, however. 6. In 2011, Jim Parsons won his second Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series Emmy for playing Sheldon in The Big Bang Theory, meaning that Steve Carell didn't win for his final season of The Office as Michael Scott. Kevin Winter / Getty Images, Amy Graves / WireImage In fact, Steve has never won an Emmy. 7. Katherine Heigl is still the only main Grey's Anatomy cast member to win an Emmy, taking home Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2007 over her costars Sandra Oh and Chandra Wilson. Dan MacMedan / WireImage, Frazer Harrison / Getty Images Katherine declined to submit herself for an Emmy the following year, saying in a statement at the time, "I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention." 8. In 2007, James Gandolfini didn't win Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his final season as Tony Soprano in The Sopranos. Instead, James Spader won for Boston Legal. Albert L. Ortega / WireImage Gandolfini did win three Emmys for his role over the years, so he didn't go completely unrecognized. 9. BoJack Horseman was nominated for two Outstanding Animated Program Creative Arts Emmys, for the episodes "Free Churro" and "The View From Halfway Down." It lost to The Simpsons in 2019 and Rick and Morty in 2020. Fox, Netflix BoJack never recieved a Primetime Emmy nomination. 10. In 2015, Amy Poehler lost her sixth consecutive Lead Actress in a Comedy Series Emmy nomination for playing Leslie Knope in Parks and Recreation. She lost to Julia Louis-Dreyfus, whose performance in Veep would lead her to win the award five times consecutively. Jason LaVeris / FilmMagic, Jeffrey Mayer / WireImage Amy did win an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series in 2016 for her SNL comeback with Tina Fey. 11. Finally, in 2019 Game of Thrones won Outstanding Drama Series for its questionable final season. It beat shows like Better Call Saul, Succession, and Pose. FREDERIC J. BROWN / AFP via Getty Images, Amy Sussman / WireImage Game of Thrones still has the most Emmy wins for a scripted series. Make sure to check out BuzzFeed's Emmy coverage this Sunday, Sept. 14.
