Whether it's Viola Davis making history as the first Black woman to win the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, Glee-ful opening performances, shocking wins (and snubs), or legendary red carpet looks, the Emmys are a prime destination for awards season entertainment. Allen J. Schaben / Getty Images The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards taking place this year will be no different, with tough competition between fan-favorite shows like Severance, The Studio, The White Lotus, and The Penguin being the talk of the town (each having 20+ nominations, BTW). With the 2025 Emmys just around the corner, we decided to take a walk down memory lane to see some of the most iconic celebrity looks that have ever graced the red carpet. To see what this year's best look will be, tune in this Sunday, Sept. 14, at 8:00 p.m. EDT/5:00 p.m. PDT on CBS and Paramount+. 1. Lucille Ball, 1954 Archive Photos / Getty Images Lucille Ball accepted the award for Best Actress Starring in a Regular Series at the sixth Emmy Awards for I Love Lucy, which received four nominations on the night. The poodle skirt was a sign of the times (and we're totally not secretly waiting for its return). 2. Ann Sothern, 1955 Michael Ochs Archives / Getty Images Ann Sothern accepted the award for Best Actress Starring in a Regular Series this year for her role in Private Secretary, and the fur coat paired with the statement necklace is just pure style. 3. Dinah Shore, 1956 University Of Southern California / Getty Images Dinah Shore took home the award for Best Female Singer this year, and she stunned in a floral sequin dress with white gloves. We'd like to crown this look as the best of the decade, but that's just our opinion. 4. Lucille Ball, 1957 Michael Ochs Archives / Getty Images Back again and somehow beating out her 1954 look, Lucille Ball attended the 9th annual Emmy Awards with her then-husband, Desi Arnaz. Of course, she looks absolutely beautiful. 5. Polly Bergen, 1958 Nbc / Getty Images Polly Bergen accepted the award for Best Single Performance by an Actress, Lead or Support, for her role in Playhouse 90 this year, wearing a beautiful gown with flower detailing on the side. 6. Dinah Shore, 1959 Phil Burchman / Getty Images A two-time winner, Shore took home the award for Best Musical or Variety Series and Best Performance by an Actress (Continuing Character) in a Musical or Variety Series for her role in The Dinah Shore Chevy Show. She truly loved a column dress and evening glove combo, and honestly, so do we. 7. Ann-Margret, 1960 Ron Galella / Getty Images The Swedish-American actress, singer, and dancer, Ann-Margret, attended the 12th Annual Emmy Awards with fluttering, dramatic lashes and flowery embellishments, making for a look that was a true product of its time. 8. Carol Burnett, 1961 Nbc / Getty Images Carol Burnett was a presenter for the 13th annual Emmy Awards, wearing an elegant floor-length long-sleeve gown. After seeing all of these early looks, we really need pixie cuts to make a comeback. 9. Carolyn Jones, 1962 Bettmann / Getty Images Known most famously for her role as Morticia Addams in the TV series, The Addams Family, Carolyn Jones attended the Emmy Awards this year with her husband, Aaron Spelling (director), in a classically chic gown and the staple of early Emmys attire - evening gloves. 10. Jane Fonda, 1963 Darlene Hammond / Getty Images Jane Fonda and Richard Chamberlain cohosted a segment at the Emmy Awards this year, and she just screams elegance in her fur wrap and evening glove combo. 11. Joan Marshall, 1964 Archive Photos / Getty Images Best known for her roles as a guest star in Star Trek and The Twilight Zone, Joan Marshall attended the 16th Emmy Awards in an eye-catching patterned dress and pearls. Don't forget the evening gloves! 12. Mary Tyler Moore, 1965 Nbc / Getty Images Mary Tyler Moore's simple, yet classic, floor-length dress and ultra-long evening gloves make for a timeless look. 13. Dick Van Dyke, 1966 Michael Ochs Archives / Getty Images As seen above, Dick Van Dyke wore a tailored suit with a bow tie and matching embellishments on his undershirt and suit cuffs. 14. The Monkees, 1967 Archive Photos / Getty Images Pop band The Monkees all showed up dressed to the nines this year, each with their own distinct styles. 15. Lucille Ball, 1968 Bettmann / Getty Images Lucille Ball one-upped herself, yet again. Trading in the fur for feathers, as if she couldn't get any more extravagant. 16. Hope Lange, 1969 Abc Photo Archives / Getty Images Hope Lange understands how to make a pop of color truly shine in this long-sleeve dress with red ruff
