In the graphic footage, he can be heard talking just moments before the gunshot rings out. The Salt Lake Tribune / Getty Images The single shot was believed to have been fired from a roof approximately 130 meters away from where Kirk was sitting on a small stage. Two suspects were arrested but subsequently released. The search for the suspected shooter is still ongoing. Now, CNN reports he was answering a question about gun violence in the moments before he was shot. The Salt Lake Tribune / Getty Images In video footage, an audience member can be heard asking: "Do you know how many transgender Americans have been mass shooters over the last ten years?" Kirk responds, "Too many," prompting cheers from the crowd. They then proceeded to ask Kirk if he knew how many mass shooters there have been in America over the last ten years. "Counting or not counting gang violence?" Kirk replies, just seconds before he's struck by the bullet, seemingly in the neck. CNN / Via edition.cnn.com It's important to note that the large majority of mass shootings in the US are not connected to trans people at all. According to CNN, there have been more than 5,700 mass shootings in the US since January 2013, and only five shooters were confirmed as trans. In videos of Kirk's shooting, the crowd quickly realizes the severity of the situation, and audience members can be heard yelling, "Run, run, run!" One onlooker interviewed by CNN said that they initially thought the shooting was "an act or performance," due to the nature of the conversation that was being had in the preceding moments. The Salt Lake Tribune / Getty Images "My first thought was it was part of an act or performance, right, because you're just not thinking clearly," 45-year-old bystander Jeremy King told the outlet, per People. "Because they're interviewing and asking about gun rights with the (LGBTQ+) community." President Donald Trump, to whom Kirk was a close ally, has led reactions to the shooting, calling it "a dark moment for America." We'll keep you posted with any updates.
