Two weeks after threatening Japan with 25% tariffs, the Republican leader took to Truth Social to boast about how the two nations had finally struck a deal that he claims will be beneficial for United States citizens.

"We just completed a massive deal with Japan, perhaps the largest deal ever made. Japan will invest, at my direction, $550 billion dollars into the United States, which will receive 90% of the profits," he alleged in the update. "Perhaps most importantly, Japan will open their country to trade including cars and trucks, rice and certain other agricultural products and other things. Japan will pay reciprocal tariffs to the United States of 15%." _ In early July, Donald Trump told Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru that his nation would have to fork over a 25% duty on exports to America if a deal wasn't struck by August 1. Japan is currently the fifth-largest trading partner of the United States among individual nations, behind Mexico, Canada, China and Germany. According to the Census Bureau, America had a $69.4 billion trade deficit with Japan in 2024. _ According to The Japan Times, the country's top tariff negotiator Ryosei Akazawa attended talks with Donald Trump's Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent right before the deal was announced. According to the president, his administration also signed an agreement with Philippine President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., which includes 19% reciprocal tariffs. Additionally, Indonesia allegedly signed a similar deal with the United States.
