Somebody's gonna bring my name into the conversation if they want to be in the conversation."by Mychal ThompsonBuzzFeed StaffFacebookPinterestLink Reneé Rapp just wants people to keep her name out their mouth, especially if you're going to invalidate her sexuality. They were discussing artists like Fletcher and JoJo Siwa (who are in relationships with men) before Betty randomly brought up Reneé. Amanda Edwards / Getty Images Betty (real name Jessica Anne Newham), who identifies as bisexual and non-binary, said, "It shouldn't be illegal for you to fall in love. It's kind of like, now we've come so far, that our community is so strong, that now it's like a crime to be straight." made it out media / youtu.be She also said in the podcast, "I have so much space and love for those women who are probably going through it right now. I think it's hard when you become representative of something to other people, and then you change or you are just following your heart, and then that means other people feel that they are not represented anymore. The pressure of that is so immense." Then, she randomly referenced Reneé, who is currently in a relationship with singer-songwriter Towa Bird, saying, "Reneé Rapp is like, 'You'll never catch me dating a man.' Like, 'Go off, queen. I love that for you!' But I also hold space for her in 10 years if she goes, 'Oops, I met the love of my life and it's this man, I didn't mean to.' It's like, that's OK!" Gregg Deguire / Getty Images Betty's comments were met with immediate backlash. In this Reddit thread, one person said, "Some people don't have a problem with lesbians being attracted to women, but they have a real big problem with lesbians not 'including' men." Another person wrote, "The way she spoke about Reneé was so dismissive, she clearly doesn't believe Reneé is a lesbian. It's just repackaged therapy speak for 'you haven't met the right man yet.' Reneé is a lesbian. She has a PARTNER and you're out here "holding space" for her to find a man? Are we holding space for RuPaul to find his dream woman??? Elton John?? No? Then stfu. Pls for the love of fuck leave us lesbians alone. We don't like men and we never will." In a recent interview with Cosmopolitan UK, Renee responded to Betty's comments that suggested she, even though she identifies as lesbian, might revert to a straight relationship one day. Rebecca Sapp / Getty Images "I'm never surprised," Reneé said. "People are always going for lesbians! Somebody's gonna bring my name into the conversation if they want to be in the conversation. So no, it doesn't surprise me at all." Steve Granitz / Getty Images "I mean, it's just very similar to the whole, 'she hasn't found the right man.' It's incredibly similar, let's be so clear. I'm just like, 'What the fuck? What makes you think I'm gonna end up with a man?' Also, how about don't talk about me when it comes to a man? I'm very publicly in a very loving relationship with a woman. So I'm not really sure what about that is so blurry. I mean, I completely understand that identifying yourself can be really difficult. There is so much pressure when it comes to labelling yourself, but I think that pressure often comes from you." Rebecca Sapp / Getty Images She continued. "Like, no-one ever had a gun to my head and was like, 'tell me what you are, right the fuck now.' I had a gun to my own head and I was like, 'tell me what you are, right the fuck now,' because I was trying to figure it out, because I didn't know who I was." Theo Wargo / Getty Images "So I'm always confused whenever people try to do that to other people. Just focus on yourself. Just literally focus on yourself. Don't bring my big fucking lesbian name into your mouth and into this drama." Christopher Polk / Getty Images To be fair, Betty did issue an apology before Reneé's response on Instagram stories, addressing her comments on the podcast. "In recent days, I've taken time to sit with the conversation around my gender and sexuality. I recognize that the language I used poorly articulated my experience and unintentionally reinforced ideas that were harmful or dismissive, particularly toward the lesbian community," she said. "That was never my intention, and I'm truly sorry. Everyone's journey is deeply personal, and I shouldn't have spoken in ways that generalized or spoke for others." "I went into the interview to discuss my own journey specifically, h
