Let me rewind. Food Network While on a recent trip through Italy, I was determined to eat the world's best pizza. I grew up watching the Food Network, so I know that one of its biggest stars, Giada De Laurentiis, is famous for her Italian cooking. Surely she'd also have recommendations for her favorite eats throughout the country, especially since she was literally born in Rome. So, I did some research and saw her reveal what she considers to be her favorite pizza ever, and I decided to try it for myself. However, I've never felt so betrayed in my entire life. Instagram: @spenceralthouse According to Giada De Laurentiis, the best pizza ever is located at Antico Forno Roscioli in Rome. Specifically, she orders the pizza bianca with fresh mortadella. Giada said she "used to eat it for lunch in Italy almost daily" when she was growing up, and now it's the first meal she gets whenever she visits Rome. Spencer Althouse, tiktok.com "Pizza bianca" translates to "white pizza," as Giada explains in her TikTok video, "So it's pizza, just no cheese, no tomato sauce. More like bread. Think of it like a pita, but better." Now, if someone asked me for a slice of pizza and I handed them a pita with deli meat inside then I'd probably get some dirty looks. But I'm not Italian, and as the saying goes, when in Rome... Spencer Althouse / BuzzFeed I went to Roscioli and ordered Giada's pizza bianca, as well as a more "traditional" slice, just so I could compare the two. The interesting thing about Roscioli is that they don't sell pizza by the slice. Instead, the person behind the counter holds up the entire pizza and runs their knife along its side until the customer says "when." That portion is cut off, weighed, and then sold based on how heavy it is. Spencer Althouse / BuzzFeed My food was put in the oven and wrapped up. I didn't notice that something was wrong until after I paid and got outside. Not only did my pizza not look like Giada's, but, as someone who's lived in New York for nearly 15 years, it didn't even look like pizza to me. It was literally just a slice of bread. I knew that pizza bianca didn't have sauce, but this really caught me off guard. White pizza in the US is apparently very different from white pizza in Rome. Below is what it looked like when I unpacked everything. Brace yourself. Spencer Althouse / BuzzFeed I frantically rewatched Giada's video to see where I went wrong. In it, she holds up her slice and simply says, "Pizza bianca with fresh mortadella." Her line reading of it made me think the mortadella was a built-in fixture of every pizza bianca slice, not an optional add-on. Perhaps my naivety got the better of me because I thought, "There's no way someone would order a plain piece of bread as their pizza - surely it must automatically come with something." But I was wrong, and I'll happily take the blame for getting this order incorrect! tiktok.com, Spencer Althouse / BuzzFeed ~However~, I will say that I've watched every single season of The Next Food Network Star, in which Giada was both a co-host and judge. I've seen her scold contestants for not being clear or direct with viewers. It's apparently the first rule of hosting a cooking show! So, to me, if I were a TV host and had a specific restaurant order for my followers, I'd probably say something like, "I always get the pizza bianca, but the trick is to also order a side of fresh mortadella so you can sandwich it between the bread. You have to go to a separate counter to order their cold cuts, but it's so worth it." I went back inside and ordered a few slices of mortadella from their separate deli counter. This way I could assemble my "pizza" and have it look exactly like Giada's. And it did! And you know what? It tasted great! I took a few bites of the pizza bianca sans mortadella too, but Giada was spot on because the mortadella really makes this work. The dough on its own was a bit bland and flavorless. It just tasted like a random piece of flatbread. Nothing inherently special or must-try about it. But the mortadella was fantastic. I do wish there was some sort of sauce or spread on top, but I guess that would defeat the purpose of a pizza bianca. I also don't want to make Italians too mad at me because I'd definitely love to visit again. After all, Giada literally referred to this sandwich as "home." Spencer Althouse / BuzzFeed However - and this is a big however! - I would never refer to this pizza bianca as an actual pizza. If the mortadella was served on ~top~ of the bread then I'd be more inclined to say so, but I don't think you can cut open a flatbread and stuff it with ingredients and
