There's a freedom of self here."by Mychal ThompsonBuzzFeed StaffFacebookPinterestLink This is Robin Wright. Shane Anthony Sinclair / Getty Images You may know the 59-year-old actor from her roles as Buttercup from 1987's The Princess Bride to Claire Underwood from the award-winning Netflix series House of Cards. As for the real-life role Robin's been playing for the past few years, it's an American living in England. (C)Paramount/Courtesy Everett Collection In a Aug. 30 profile with The Times U.K., Robin reflected on the differences between living in America and England and she came to a rather daunting conclusion. There's a freedom of self here. People are so kind." Dave Benett / Getty Images "They're living. They're not in the car in traffic, panicked on a phone call, eating a sandwich. That's most of America. Everything's rush, competition and speed," she said. Pascal Le Segretain / Getty Images There's a quiet peace she's found in this part of the U.K. versus the busy streets of Hollywood, where she's burdened by the sound of neighbors constantly renovating their homes. "Everyone's building a huge house and I'm just done with all that - I love the quiet. And I've met my person. Finally." Stephane Cardinale - Corbis / Getty Images Robin's partner is Henry Smith, "a British-born, Australian-raised architect" whom she met while living in England. There's a give and take to her relocation, as Robin's realized during her time in the U.K., there's an "obsession with class," as editor Laura Pullman writes. "It's very evident when you're in a room and you feel the judgment or the praise of someone who's more elevated," Robin said. "I'm trying to figure it out. Why are you guys so obsessed with who went to this boarding school or this university? Who gives a shit?" Axelle / Getty Images Robin is one of many of celebrities who have moved outside the United States, in company with Rosie O'Donnell, Ellen Dengeneres, and more. Kelly Sullivan / Getty Images for RH, Mike Marsland / Getty Images Ellen and her wife, Portia de Rossi, decided to leave the United States and move to the Cotswolds after the results of the 2020 presidential election, per People.

Rosie relocated to Ireland, saying in a 2025 TikTok video, "The people are so loving and so kind, so welcoming, and I'm very grateful. I'm in the process of getting my Irish citizenship, as I have Irish grandparents, and that's what's going on...I was never someone who thought I would move to another country, that's what I decided would be the best for myself and my 12-year-old child. And here we are..." While in the U.K., Robin's been working on The Girlfriend, a new Prime Video drama, so it's not apparently linked to any belief toward the current political state of America - yet, her words still hit like a ton of bricks for those of us still navigating these loud, Hollywood streets. She said, "America is a shitshow," and I heard her loud and clear. Amazon/MGM Studios/ Courtesy Everett Collection
