But then again, Donald Trump was president of the United States then and he is again now. Also, The Case Against Adnan Syed is back on TV. The more things change, the more they stay the same, I suppose. Oh, but this time, the Adnan Syed documentary series is also streaming on HBO Max, which didn't exist in time for the first four parts. (HBO Now did, which gave way to HBO Max, which became Max and is now back to HBO Max - it's a whole thing.) The first four chapters are available to stream on HBO Max. Amy J. Berg remains writer-director. She has been filming "Part Five" since 2021 - it was originally planned for a 2023 release. A pretty large chunk of time has passed since then too. Syed's case first exploded to the national stage via the Serial podcast. Like the podcast, The Case Against Adnan Syed explores the 1999 murder of high school student Hae Min Lee and the arrest and conviction of Syed, who was her ex-boyfriend at the time. Syed was released from prison under "time served" in 2022. His conviction was not overturned. The new episode "chronicles the turns in the case that unfold after a suspect from the original investigation into Lee's murder is caught assaulting a woman," HBO's synopsis reads. "This development led Adnan's legal team to revisit the case and demand a new investigation. When the state attorney's office steps in, the prosecution pushes back, resulting in a legal and political tug of war that thrusts Adnan's case into chaotic uncertainty." "New information is unearthed," it continues, "exposing flaws in the original investigation and prosecution, including undisclosed evidence pointing to other potential suspects, suppressed witness testimony and DNA from the crime scene that has remained untested." It also follows Syed's first moments of freedom, including his reunion with family after 23 years of incarceration. Syed, his mom and brother and their family friend Rabia Chaudry all participate in the fifth episode. (Adnan was in the first batch of episodes in audio only; he's on video this time.) There's a bunch of lawyers in this thing - in addition to Chaudry, attorneys Marilyn Mosby, Erica J. Suter, Susan Simpson and Becky Feldman are featured. HBO Documentary Films' The Case Against Adnan Syed: Part Five: The Tree Grew is produced in association with Sky, and produced by Instinct, Working Title Television (part of Universal International Studios) and Disarming Films. Berg executive produces along with Chaudry, Henrietta Conrad, Jemima Khan, Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Nancy Abraham, Lisa Heller and Tina Nguyen; it is produced by Jenna Cedicci, Dana Kuznetzkoff.
