Kristy Sparow / Getty Images As I'm sure you know, Matty and Taylor briefly dated back in May 2023, with their ill-fated romance sparking huge controversy at the time due to Matty's incredibly problematic behavior. This included the singer being filmed performing what appeared to be a Nazi salute on stage just months before he and Taylor stepped out together. Robert Kamau / Getty Images Even more recently, Matty had made some highly offensive comments during a podcast appearance where he'd admitted to masturbating to Black women being "brutalized."The pair were romantically linked just a couple of weeks after Taylor ended her six-year relationship with British actor Joe Alwyn, and her 2024 album, The Tortured Poets Department, later suggested that she and Matty had actually been involved in an on-again, off-again situationship since 2014.
However, just one month after reports of the relationship first broke, the couple called it quits - with Taylor later suggesting through her music that Matty had ghosted her. Taylor started dating her now-fiancé, Travis Kelce, the following month. Meanwhile, Matty began dating model Gabbriette three months after the breakup, in September 2023, with the pair meeting through their mutual friend, Charli XCX. See our Taylor Swift Discussions And on Friday, Gabbriette faced fierce backlash from Taylor's fans after she commented on comic Veronika Slowikowska's now-deleted Instagram reel. In the reel, which was watched in its entirety by BuzzFeed before it was deleted, Veronika performed her imagining of what some of the song titles on The Life of a Showgirl's tracklist might sound like. Taylor Hill / Getty Images Veronika's video started with her version of "Eldest Daughter" before she moved on to "Actually Romantic." The lyrics to Veronika's interpretation of Taylor's upcoming songs were completely inoffensive, and "Actually Romantic" primarily focused on finding romance in mundane things, like eating pizza. Instagram @veronika_iscool / Via Instagram: @https://www.instagram.com/veronika_iscool/?hl=en Now, there are seemingly two major triggers behind this backlash. The first is that a screenshot that went viral on X showed Gabbriette's comment under Veronika's video while Veronika was singing "Eldest Daughter," which does not give the context that Veronika also performed a version of "Actually Romantic." Instagram @veronika_iscool / Via x.com This led to Gabbriette being accused of looking for leaks of Taylor's music, and also being ridiculed for "knowing" Taylor's tracklist off the top of her head. This ties in to the second trigger. Basically, fans have theorized that "Actually Romantic" will be about Gabbriette's friend Charli XCX, who was thought to reference Taylor in her 2024 song "Sympathy is a Knife." Andreas Rentz / Getty Images If you didn't know, Charli is now married to Matty's The 1975 bandmate, George Daniel, and "Sympathy is a Knife" is widely believed to be about how insecure Charli felt around Taylor when she was dating Matty. Charli sings: "I don't wanna share this space / I don't wanna force a smile / This one girl taps my insecurities / Don't know if it's real or if I'm spiraling.""Don't wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend's show / Fingers crossed behind my back, I hope they break up quick," she later adds. This has led to a Swiftie fan theory that "Actually Romantic" will be about how Charli's fixation on Taylor was "actually romantic," which is why Gabbriette mentioning that song specifically in her comment has ruffled feathers. Those who don't know that Veronika performed a version of "Actually Romantic" in the reel, which Gabbriette was praising, have claimed that she asked Veronika to do that song next because she is aware of the fan theory that it is about Charli. Meanwhile, those who know it was included in the reel
