In 2022, Bruce was diagnosed with aphasia, a condition marked by loss of the ability to speak or communicate. The following year, the family shared that it had progressed to frontotemporal dementia, or FTD. She said that she told their daughters "pretty quickly" about their father's diagnosis, adding, "I've always been very open with the girls. I never wanted them to think that he wasn't paying attention to them." Disney+ The 47-year-old said that she initially felt that she had to take responsibility for caregiving, saying, "I really felt like I was so alone, so isolated." Upon learning that loud noises could agitate people with FTD, she further didn't allow any playdates or sleepovers at the house: "I didn't know if parents would feel comfortable leaving their children at our home...the girls were isolated, too. It was a hard time." Disney Plus It took one of Bruce's daughters with Demi Moore, Scout, expressing concern for Emma to get help - though she does still struggle with "guilt" over enlisting professional caregivers to help. "We are very fortunate enough that we can afford care. Many families aren't able to. Formal caregiving is astronomical, yet they deserve every penny," she explained. Disney+ At some point, Emma and their daughters made the decision for Bruce to live in a one-story home nearby with 24-hour care. "It was one of the hardest decisions that I've had to make so far," she explained. "But I knew, first and foremost, Bruce would want that for our daughters. He would want them to be in a home that was more tailored to their needs, not his needs. We're there a lot. It's our second home, the girls have their things there. It's a house that is filled with love and warmth and care and laughter, and it's been beautiful to see that." Disney+ Emma hopes that by sharing her story, other caregivers will feel less alone, and people can become more aware of FTD. "We want people to be diagnosed earlier, when they can participate in these trials," she added of Bruce's public diagnosis.
