And in a new interview with Parade, she shared an unconventional parenting take. Axelle / Getty Images Though not everyone will agree with her, Tia's belief stems from her desire to raise independent children - and it seems she's succeeding. The mom of two cited an occasion when her daughter, Cairo, was hit by a ball at school, and when the nurse asked if she wanted to talk to her mom, the child said "no." Axelle / Getty Images "I desperately wanted to speak to her and hear her voice to make sure that she was OK," Tia said, admitting she found the experience quite difficult. "But I had to allow this opportunity for her to gain independence and say, 'I got this.'" Leon Bennett / Getty Images Of course, Tia is no stranger to sparking a parenting debate. Her latest comments come just a month after she took to Instagram to ask why she gets "so much backlash" for referring to herself as a single mother, despite the fact that she splits parenting duties with her ex. "Being a 'single mom' doesn't always mean a mom doing it all alone without the father present in their kids' lives at all," Tia wrote on IG in July. "I recognize that archetype is extremely difficult, and I truly empathize. But what often gets overlooked is the nuance of what being a single mom can actually mean."
