Award-winning costume designer Janie Bryant is no stranger to Emmy season. After taking home a trophy for her work on Deadwood, in addition to countless nominations for her midcentury looks on Mad Men, Bryant is back in the spotlight - and on the red carpet - thanks to a nomination for Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone prequel, 1923. "I feel so grateful to Taylor for having me on this epic journey," Bryant tells The Hollywood Reporter from her home in Los Angeles. "I was so passionate about working with the actors on the second season. I love my whole team." Bryant says she also credits this moment to Deadwood and its creator for jumpstarting her costume design career. "I owe so much to David Milch," she says of the 2004 HBO series creator. "He was the first one to hire me for his Western. It's really come full circle. I'm so thankful to be recognized." Bryant says it was a pinch-me moment that brought back memories. "A.C. Lyles was definitely guiding me," she says, referencing the late Deadwood producer. "He passed a few years ago, and he used to always call me Miss Edith Head. I remember the first day that I went to Paramount Studios when I first moved to Los Angeles. I saw this amazing man drive through in this vintage convertible Mercedes. He was in this bespoke suit and was gorgeous. I later found out he was A.C. Courtesy of Janie Bryant In addition to the Yellowstone prequels 1923 and 1883, Bryant recently wrapped production on the second season of Landman with Billy Bob Thornton, Ali Larter and Michelle Randolph. "What an amazing cast," she says. "I love those actors so much. It was incredible to jump from a period show to a contemporary show. I loved it." Bryant was thrilled to join the project after being a fan of the first season. "After 1923 had wrapped, I had interviewed for a few [other] shows and didn't get them," she shares. "I remember sitting at home. I was meditating, and I was like, 'The right job will find me.' And the line producer called me and said, 'Hey, do you want to design Landman? It is amazing to be included in the Taylor Sheridan family. I'm so thankful. I was like, 'That's the right decision.' Landman was just waiting for me." Bryant is also currently fast at work designing The Madison in addition to another forthcoming Yellowstone spinoff (working title The Dutton Ranch) with Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser and Annette Bening. "I leave for Bozeman, Montana, next week," Bryant teases. "And then I'll be back down in Texas." But first, she'll squeeze in a red carpet moment at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Sept. 8. "I'm wearing a custom-made gown from Retrofête to the Emmys," she says, referencing the New York-based label that she also wore to the Paramount Studios event. "I'm so excited about my dress." Ahead of her big day and upcoming shoots, we caught up with Bryant to discuss her favorite fall fashion, western-inspired pieces (including from brands she discovered from Reilly), red carpet hacks and the book behind her new passion project, The Paris Secret. So, that's a work in progress, but it's such a beautiful book. It's made to be turned into a TV show. That's what I'm working on." Vapon Topstick, 2 Boxes $9.68 at Amazon For red carpet moments, Bryant says she keeps Topstick close by. "Oh, believe me - I'll definitely have my Topstick ready," she laughs.
