King Charles was actually born inside the palace in November 1948, after the royal family converted a guest room into a makeshift operating room. Originally built in 1703, Buckingham Palace functions as the administration headquarters for the entire royal family. The property is built on a 830,000-square-foot lot and houses 775 rooms, including 52 royal guest rooms as well as 19 state rooms. Charles and Camilla's current residence is Clarence House, located adjacent to St. James Palace on the ceremonial roadway known as The Mall in London. Clarence House was originally built in the 1820s, with Charles living there since the death of his grandmother, The Queen Mother, in 2003.
