The basic premise of The 40-Year-Old Virgin started as a comedy sketch that Carell performed early in his career at Chicago's famed Second City improv theater. "It was about a guy playing poker with his friends and they were all telling really dirty sex stories and slowly you realize that he's a virgin and his stories make no sense," Carell revealed to GQ in 2022.
