Now with one golden statuette under his belt, co-executive producer and showrunner David Bernad catches The Hollywood Reporter up on scouting the next location for the fictional luxury resort and whether viewers can expect scenes from Survivor to be written into season four. How does it feel to have 23 Emmy nominations? It's our third year, and the fact that people are still enjoying the show is a huge compliment to Mike White, especially for him to reinvent the show each season. It's such a crazy task, and that he's been able to do it these past three seasons and that we've been nominated speaks to how brilliant he is. Once the nominations came out, Mike and I called each other immediately. My favorite call was to Natasha Rothwell [who plays Belinda Lindsey], who just burst into tears, and then I started crying. It's hard because obviously not everyone gets nominated - there's not an [Emmys] ensemble nomination. The length of time we were in Thailand and the dedication all the actors put into the show - it's incredible that we had eight actor nominations - but I wish everyone could have been nominated. So I feel really happy for the people who were nominated, and I feel terrible for the people who weren't nominated. But it was a great outcome, and we're super happy. Carrie Coon even recently told us that "everyone auditions." Have you been surprised at who's knocking on your door? Yeah, it's funny. Maybe Mike and I are both so insecure - I don't know, we should save this for our therapists - but we really don't come at it with this idea that everyone wants to be in the show. For us, it's like, "Will we be able to get anyone to do the fourth season?" And that's genuine. I think we're both oblivious, to be honest, to that. Obviously, we see the articles and we see interviews; Mike and I send those to each other every time one of those stories comes out. Michelle Monaghan as Jaclyn Lemon in season three, set in Thailand. Fabio Lovino/HBO Have you and Mike talked about how he'll work his Survivor 50 experience into the new season? No, we haven't talked about that. Having worked with Mike for a long time, what's amazing is that when we go on these scouts for each season, so much of the experience of the scouts and who we meet and what we see then ends up somehow layered into the show. And I know what I know because I was there, and I was like, "Oh my God, I remember when we were in Sicily and that happened," and he put it into the show. So I'm sure, even subconsciously, something Mike experienced from this past season of Survivor will end up somehow in the show. I don't know what his experiences were, but he's such a humanist and he's so aware of the world and his experiences, and I think that always informs his writing. As you go into each season, how concerned are you about whether the next cast will be able to create that extended family feel? I think it's all organic, but I think with Mike as a showrunner who writes all the scripts and directs all the episodes, everyone kind of coalesces around him. That level of authorship helps create a good vibe on set with the cast and that consistency of there being just one writer they can go and talk to and have a conversation with. That really helps to ensure a great vibe and cohesion on set because you're not re-meeting new directors every episode and having to be annoyed by someone you don't get to know. They spend every day with Mike and there's a consistent relationship. There's no confusion on who's running [the show]. Mike is the author of the series and the director, and so [everyone's] energies are focused on that. It removes a lot of uncertainty or potential drama. Speaking of location scouting, the $1 million question: What can you share about where The White Lotus is going for season four? I think we're narrowing down where we'll end up and we're still kind of having those conversations, but I think it's starting to come into focus. You and Mike have mentioned wanting to go to Japan. My colleagues tried to nail down where the series might head next based on Four Seasons locations, tax credits and other clues. Have you seen their list yet? I think I saw that. I'm actually curious to see how accurate they are. Bets are on Punta Mita, Mexico; Anguilla; Australia; t
