Watch: How Alyson Stoner Navigated Kidnapping Plots, Stalkers as a Child StarAlyson Stoner and Demi Lovato's friendship wasn't always as carefree as summer camp. In their new memoir, Semi-Well-Adjusted Despite Literally Everything, released August 12, Alyson details what it was like being close with Demi during their time in Disney Channel's Camp Rock. "For several years, I felt suffocated under the weight of Demi's power and terrified of her PR team," the 32-year-old author wrote, "the extreme remarks from her fanbase, and the way mass media gave a fabricated identity a life of its own." According to Alyson, the Camp Rock cast witnessed the struggles Demi-who has been open about her sobriety journey over the years-was facing, including when they joined the Jonas Brothers on their Jonas Brothers: Live in Concert tour. "Her moods swung unpredictably from euphoric to furious to dejected," Alyson wrote of Demi. "The hardness in her eyes and bite to her speech that she formerly used to jokingly imitate Regina George from Mean Girls cemented as a fixed state." E! News has reached out to Demi's rep for comment. readHow Alyson Stoner Navigated Kidnapping Plots, Stalkers Amid Child Stardom"To get through the tour, the entire crew bent the knee, accepting that at any moment we could be open targets for her to externalize her pain," the Cheaper by the Dozen alum wrote of the alleged behavior. "At sixteen, being forced to submit to her power plays was confusing. She verbally lashed out behind the curtain, and then we'd walk onstage for a sound check meet-and-greet and publicly kiss her crown."Mike Marsland/WireImageAs a member of the concert production and co-star of Demi, Alyson explained how Demi's fans would threaten them in case they were involved in Demi's off-camera challenges. "Her fans sent me DMs saying I deserved to die," Alyson said, "and that they'd cut me up if I 'messed with' their idol." Not only did Alyson feel immense pressure to cover for Demi in front of her fans, but in front of the media as well. "Most uncomfortably, media outlets centered her as a main topic in my interviews, and I answered each question with a smile while feeling sick from withholding secrets," the Step Up alum wrote. "I felt so pathetic about struggling to move on, especially when I knew I wasn't even a passing thought on her mind anymore." Alyson and the "Cool for the Summer" artist met while auditioning for Camp Rock, where they recalled thinking Demi was "born cool." Once they were both cast, the pair became friends and vowed to help each other with their body insecurities. Kevin Winter/Getty Images"Neither of us really knew how that would work, nor were we conscientious of how many deeper issues were entangled in our surface-level food challenges," Alyson reminisced. "Nonetheless, we wanted to be a source of encouragement and promised to never enable each other as 'thin-spiration.' Unfortunately, our good intentions didn't stand a chance, and there was no time to slow down and course correct. We were on a runaway train." After 14 years of not speaking, the two caught up when Demi interviewed Alyson for her 2024 documentary Child Star, which explored the harsh realities young actors face growing up in the spotlight. "Demi apologized, and I didn't realize that my teen self had been waiting on the doorstop to hear her say sorry ever since that tumultuous time," Alyson said of their conversation. "I had the chance to more fully understand and empathize with her excruciating experiences. As we explored the possibility of reconnection, we turned our eyes to protecting current and future generations from the same plights." The Jonas Brothers' lead singer took on the leading man role in Camp Rock, playing the aforementioned moody rocker (which he loves to remind fans of by recreating scenes). After the group disbanded in 2013, most expected Joe to launch a solo career-especially after being the first to release an individual album pre-split. Instead, he found success with his band DNCE and their major hit "Cake By the Ocean." Plus there was that whole Jonas Brothers rebirth. Joe had romances with Taylor Swift and Gigi Hadid before he began dating Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner in 2016. They announced their engagement in October 2017. Following the 2019 Billboard Music Awards, Joe and Sophie held a surprise ceremony at a Las Vegas wedding chapel, swapping ring pops instead of wedding bands. They later held a second ceremony in France. The couple went on to welcome two daughters: Willa, born in July 2020, and Delphine, who arrived two years later. They announced their split in 2023. "It was incredibly sad," she detailed to Harper's Bazaar in 2024. "We had a beautiful relationship, and it was hard."Disney Channel/Kobal/Shutterstock, Rob Latour/ShutterstockDemi
