"I was 29, and I was doing a bunch of things in Los Angeles; I was a production assistant, I was a makeup artist and I was always making jewelry and selling it on the side," she recently told Today's Jill Martin. "I'd do what most people do is I get resourceful and I went on game shows. [I thought] I need to make money, I'm scrappy." Julia Roberts included the designer's bracelets in her "Favorite Things" segment during an appearance on Oprah Winfrey's show, putting Melinda Maria on the map. Last year, Spigel opened her first store in L.A., where she'll host a 20th anniversary event on Aug. 29.
