Hospitals and universities across the U.K. are turning down free portraits of King Charles III. Between November 2023 and August 2024, the His Majesty's Portrait Scheme offered more than 20,500 framed portraits free of charge to eligible U.K. public institutions - a program that reportedly cost taxpayers £2.7 million (about $3.6 million). But a shocking number of portraits went unclaimed. While some royal observers were surprised by the figures, Conservative Party Leader Kemi Badenoch blamed public sector managers' fear of offending people. And she may have a point.
