It's Friday, and the vibes are definitely a little ... freaky. If you're not heading to the theater to watch Freakier Friday with Lindsay Lohan, why not stay at home and take advantage of your HBO Max subscription? The streamer has hundreds of great films, and Watch With Us has selected three underrated movies to watch over the weekend. The surreal dramedy Dream Scenario, the haunting thriller I Saw the TV Glow and the colorful biopic Big Eyes are all worth streaming in August or any time of the year. 'Dream Scenario' (2023) Paul Matthews (Nicolas Cage) is an ordinary professor who one day discovers something incredible - he appears in the dreams of people all across the world. From acquaintances to strangers, they dream about Paul as a passive, weak presence, which disturbs him. When a colleague writes an article about this phenomenon, Paul becomes an unexpected media celebrity. But Paul's newfound fame brings him more trouble than it's worth, and soon, his marriage and sanity are threatened by all the attention - and criticism - he's receiving. 25 Must-Watch Movies on HBO Max to Stream Right Now (July 2025) Dream Scenario is a fascinating "What if?" movie that blends the real and the surreal into one entertaining - if sometimes uncomfortable - package. Cage is excellent as a mild-mannered man frustrated with how people perceive him, which isn't that far from the truth. The movie makes the most of its far-out sci-fi premise without losing sight of the hard truths it's conveying about dream logic, viral fame and self-perception. The ending is appropriately trippy and melancholic, but what else would you expect from a movie like this? Dream Scenario is streaming on HBO Max. 'I Saw the TV Glow' (2024) Pre-teen Owen (Ian Foreman) doesn't have a lot of friends, but one day he strikes up a friendship with the slightly older Maddy (Jack Haven) due to their shared love for the young adult TV show, The Pink Opaque. After Maddy suddenly disappears, a now-grown-up Owen (Justice Smith) navigates his lonely adolescence but still obsesses over the show and its possible connection to Maddy's disappearance. Things take a turn for the bizarre as Maddy pops up again in Owen's life and promises to reveal to him what happened to her. But can he trust this person who seems so different from the friend he once knew? The basic plot of I Saw the TV Glow makes it sound like a thriller, but those looking for traditional suspense scares should look elsewhere. This movie is weirder and more ambitious, instead focusing on how children and teens use mass media as a way to shape their identities or discover who they want to be. Director Jane Schoenbrun utilizes evocative, neon-tinged imagery to tell a suburban horror story that's right out of a David Lynch or David Cronenberg project, yet still uniquely its own thing. If you're in the mood to be engaged yet unsettled, watch I Saw the TV Glow. I Saw the TV Glow is streaming on HBO Max. 'Big Eyes' (2014) Margaret Keane (Amy Adams) loves her husband Walter (Christoph Waltz); after all, he helped her retain custody of her daughter from a previous marriage and developed her artistic talent as a painter of odd, "big eye" portraits of their San Francisco neighbors. That's why she initially goes along with his plan for him to claim credit for painting her portraits, which soon become popular in 1960s America. What to Watch This Weekend: 11 New Movies on Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, and Hulu But as Walter lets his stolen fame get to his head, Margaret finds the courage to publicly claim credit for her work. Since Walter isn't willing to acknowledge the truth, Margaret will have to go to court to prove herself as an artist - and sever all ties with her backstabbing husband once and for all. Big Eyes is a strange biopic about a woman who is credited with making portraits that are best described as "kitsch.' Margaret is no Picasso, but she does have talent, and her story is fascinating in how it shows her gradual awakening of her own self-worth. Beaten down by life, she refuses to be taken advantage of by Walter, and Big Eyes satisfactorily portrays her fight to be recognized as not only an idiosyncratic painter but also as a late-in-life independent woman. Big Eyes is streaming on HBO Max.
