A mother and father in Michigan have been arrested after being accused of nearly starving and torturing two of their children to death. Auturo Bazan-Perez and Dulce Crystal Bazan Castillo have both been charged with multiple counts of first-degree child abuse and child torture for the way they allegedly treated their 9-year-old and 11-year-old children. The couple's 21-year-old son, Carlos Bazan Hernandez, has also been arrested and is facing abuse and torture charges as well. The Oakland County Sheriff's Office announced in a news release that hospital personnel notified deputies about a 9-year-old boy in their care back on November 17, 2025. Police were called because the boy was "severely underweight" and covered with bruises. Mother, Boyfriend Arrested in Death of Her Son, 8, Other Child Hospitalized The parents brought the child to the hospital and claimed that he was simply suffering from some kind of unspecified "medical condition," according to police. But the boy had to be intubated and did not have a pulse when deputies arrived at the hospital. He was eventually airlifted to another hospital for specialized care due to the severity of his condition. Authorities launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the boy's hospitalization, and they discovered his 11-year-old brother was "severely emaciated" at their family's home. The 11-year-old boy was then removed from his parents' care by Child Protective Services and was subsequently hospitalized. Police said that both boys were previously enrolled in public school, where they received "at least two meals a day." However, the parents took the children out of school in September 2025, with Bazan-Perez, 43, allegedly telling the school that the family was "either moving back to Mexico or to another state." "After the boys no longer attended school, their diet consisted mainly of sporadic meals of rice," police stated in the release. "The boys were not permitted to leave their bedroom. The windows were screwed shut and the window glass was painted so that the boys could not see outside." The 9-year-old victim weighed just 33 pounds, and the 11-year-old weighed only 43 pounds when they were hospitalized, which is about half the average weight of boys their ages. Police added that a 1-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl also lived in the couple's home, and they appeared to be healthy and on a normal diet. They have since been removed from Bazan-Perez and Castillo's custody. "We have another horrific child abuse case. The child-abuse cases we are seeing right now are nothing short of heartbreaking and enraging," Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said in a statement. "No child should ever fall through the cracks like this. We will not rest until those responsible are held fully and unequivocally accountable." Mom and Boyfriend Put Boys in Chicken Pen, Shot Them: Missouri Sheriff Bazan-Perez and Castillo, 42, both declined their preliminary examination hearings and were bound over to circuit court, according to court documents viewed by Law & Crime. Meanwhile, Hernandez went through with his hearing to determine whether there is probable cause to proceed to a trial amid the case. Bazan-Perez, Castillo and Hernandez are all currently being held without bond and are scheduled to return to court on March 12. It is not currently clear if any of the three defendants entered pleas or retained legal representation.
