FBI agents investigating the disappearance of an Ohio teenager have arrested a New York man who they claim had "previous interactions" with the girl, according to police. The FBI took Kyle Lawrence into custody on Thursday, February 26, nearly two weeks after 16-year-old Madison Fields went missing on February 13, the Colerain Township Police Department said in a news release the day after his arrest. Lawrence, 43, of Buffalo, New York, is accused of previously meeting with Fields in January and has not been charged directly with her disappearance, according to police. Instead, a federal criminal complaint obtained by Us Weekly charges Lawrence with transportation with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity, travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct, and transportation of child pornography. According to charging documents, while Colerain police investigated Fields' disappearance, officers learned Fields had stayed with Lawrence at a Cincinnati hotel on January 31, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Ohio said in a February 27 news release on Lawrence's arrest. Police became aware of the hotel stay - which happened about two weeks before Fields was last seen - after examining surveillance footage from the girl's home, according to federal prosecutors. The footage showed Fields had gotten into a car with New York license plates prior to the Cincinnati hotel stay, prosecutors said. The car was allegedly rented by Lawrence. After Lawrence's arrest, he acknowledged that he had spoken with Fields through Snapchat and "traveled to the Cincinnati area twice in January to meet up" with her, prosecutors said. "Lawrence advised that he communicated with Minor Victim via Snapchat application on his cell phone and would use location services on the application to locate her when he picked her up," a special agent with the FBI wrote in an affidavit. According to prosecutors, Lawrence previously landed on the FBI's radar in May 2024, after "a citizen vigilante group" confronted him in Canada, where he allegedly traveled to "have sexual contact with a purported 15-year-old girl." The FBI also discovered Lawrence was named in two online reports made to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in connection with his Snapchat account and alleged child exploitation, according to prosecutors. When agents served a search warrant at his Buffalo home on February 26, they took his electronic devices and discovered child sexual abuse material, prosecutors said. Long Island Man Kidnapped 11-Year-Old Girl Found Undressed in His Bed In the wake of Lawrence's arrest, the search for Fields continues, according to the Colerain Township Police Department, which has vowed to continue working with the FBI and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to "follow up on every lead until this case is resolved." Fields was last seen on Harry Lee Lane around 4 p.m. on February 13, when she was wearing a black Champion brand sweatshirt, camouflage pants, black shoes, and had a black backpack as well as a white grocery bag, according to police. That day, she asked if she could stay at a friend's house overnight, the FBI special agent wrote in the affidavit in support of Lawrence's criminal complaint. Her "parents agreed to the sleepover and [Fields] never returned home," the affidavit says. "Attempts to call her went straight to voicemail." The Colerain Township Police Department is asking anyone with information on Fields' whereabouts to call the department at (513) 321-2677.
