A man in Virginia has been arrested after he stabbed a woman more than 90 times and then packed her remains into a toolbox. The City of Virginia Beach announced on Wednesday, February 25, that Hagen Lawrence Roberts was sentenced to life in prison plus five years. The sentencing took place three months after he was convicted of first-degree murder and stabbing in the commission of a felony connection to the 2020 death of 63-year-old Cynthia Capps. Prosecutors said that Capps' husband called 911 on October 8, 2020, and told them he was in the shower and was unable to find his wife when he got out. He looked around the home and discovered "a single drop of blood on their kitchen floor," which led him to call the police. Virginia Beach Police Department officers responded to the home and learned that Capps and her husband rented a room in their house to Roberts. Authorities tried to enter Roberts's bedroom, though they were unable to because it was locked. They noted that he "appeared to be wet from recently taking a shower and had a cut on his right hand that was wrapped in a black bandana." Officers then looked around the property, where they "discovered blood stains in the backyard." Capps' remains were found "in a toolbox with trauma to her head and face." Authorities determined that she had been stabbed over 90 times on the head, face and neck, and forensic evidence found a "metal shard, which appeared to be the tip of a knife," lodged in Capps' skull. While looking through Roberts' room, police found a "black folding knife with a broken tip covered in dried blood," as well as clothes covered in blood in the outside trash can and bloodstains throughout the house. Additionally, the metal shard was determined to be a "direct match" to the folding knife that was found in his room. Roberts was arrested after authorities found DNA that belonged to both him and Capps on the knife, as well as on the clothing and in the bloodstains. Despite being arrested and convicted of the crimes, Roberts has maintained his innocence throughout the case. Estranged Husband Accused of Killing Wife Before Divorce Gets Life Sentence "The picture you're painting of me as a menace to society, and a killer with no remorse, is not true," Roberts said, per the Virginia-Pilot. "I do have remorse. But I can't lie and admit to something I didn't do." The presiding judge ultimately concluded that Roberts was guilty due to the "overwhelming" evidence in the case. However, it was never revealed if authorities believe Roberts had a motive in the crime. Roberts was given the maximum sentence possible during his sentencing hearing. After Capps' body was found, one neighbor recalled the scene to WRIC. "It was like police surrounding everywhere, they were in the back with the dogs and looking all in the swamp," the neighbor recalled. "We came out here and they confronted us and asked if we heard anybody arguing and we were like 'no.' That's when we heard what happened."
