A man has been arrested after he attacked a Chinese restaurant and targeted the owner by hitting him with a shovel in Orlando, Florida. Deputies from the Orange County Sheriff's Office arrested Richard Jarvis on Monday, February 23, after they received a 911 call regarding an aggravated battery incident. Officers responded to Pearl's Chinese restaurant on Central Florida Parkway, where the owner told authorities that Jarvis, 43, first attempted to enter the restaurant through the back door, according to an arrest affidavit viewed by WESH 2. "He was going to kill everyone inside," the owner said. After Jarvis wasn't able to get in through the back door, he managed to get in through the front door and headed straight to the kitchen. He then reportedly began throwing food and destroying restaurant equipment with the shovel. Man Slices 13-Year-Old's Neck Open on Florida Boardwalk in Random Attack "I had to destroy that restaurant. All Chinese restaurants are going to release a new strain of COVID on July 6," Jarvis said, per the affidavit. He also claimed to be a "prophet" and said he was "trying to save everyone." The owner eventually saw Jarvis vandalizing the kitchen, and deputies claimed he then tried to run away. However, Jarvis stopped the owner by striking him in the back with the shovel. "If you run away, I'll kill you," he said. Upon their arrival, authorities arrested Jarvis and he was taken into custody. He was charged with aggravated battery, criminal mischief and burglary of a structure with a weapon. It is not currently clear if Jarvis has entered a plea or retained legal representation following his arrest. The Orange County Sheriff's Office did not immediately respond to Us Weekly's request for comment following the incident. One day after the incident took place, nearby business manager Vanessa Trejo told WESH 2 that she overheard the commotion and called 911. "I heard help, help. 'I said, did you hear that?' I immediately went to get my husband to go back there," Trejo, who manages the June-Bee martial arts studio just two doors from the restaurant, said. Trejo explained that she picked up lunch from the restaurant about 30 minutes before Jarvis' attack. He told me both ladies were still in there, and he was attacking them," she said. Trejo also said that the restaurant's staff locked the back door as soon as they saw Jarvis talking to himself in the area. "We were really scared because nothing like this really happens," she said. In light of the attack, Trejo told Fox 35 Orlando that nearby businesses are increasing security precautions to avoid similar situations from happening. "Now we're trying to take different precautions, like keep our doors locked in the back," she said. "Keep the front door locked because he walked in through the front." Meanwhile, one customer told the outlet that they are focused on the owner's recovery. "We think about the long-term ramifications of this owner now," Clifton Hall said. "Every customer that comes in his door potentially could be a threat to him."
